Collection

Old prints

The collection presents selected old prints from the collections of the Institutes forming the RCIN. These are very diverse items, e.g. prose, poetry, essays, handbooks, prayer books, sermons, speeches, descriptions of various areas of the world or satirical texts. In Poland it is assumed that old prints are publications originating from the period between the invention of printing until the year 1800. This date is considered to be postponed until 1850, when the use of rags for paper manufacturing was abandoned. After that date publications were printed on so-called acid paper, which deteriorates easily. However, in different periods and countries an end date was adopted depending on the turning points in the history of a given state or its literature.
