IAE Library Collection

The collection contains digital versions of monographs and journals from the collections of the Main Library of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, which was established in 1953. The beginning of its collections were publications donated to the Institute by the Department for Studies on the Origins of the Polish State. The library collects scientific literature mainly in the field of prehistory, ancient and medieval archaeology, ethnography and ethnology, cultural and social anthropology, history of material culture and numismatics. The collection includes books published in the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth centuries, which are most often in the public domain. These are publications of Polish and foreign researchers, for example works of Jan Długosz or the Orgelbrand’s Universal Encyclopedia are frequently viewed. It includes also the Geological Atlas of Galicia from 1900-1904, published by the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences in Cracow. Individual sheets of the Atlas have been annotated by the outstanding Polish archaeologist – Professor Stefan Krukowski. There are also nineteenth-century magazines that are a valuable sources for researchers of Polish and European history, archaeology and ethnology .
