Title: {Two men with horses] [An iconographic document]

Creator:

[Mitkowski, Józef]

Date issued/created:

[1941]

Resource type:

Obraz

Description:

The photo presents two boys in humble, everyday clothes (too short trousers, jackets, white shirts and caps) standing in front of a stable and holding two big horses by the bridle. A foal is standing next to one of horses ; According to the owner of the photo, it shows her father Władysław and his brother Józef aged 15 and 17, respectively. During the war, the Germans often confiscated the peasants' horses for use in their army. The donor's father's elder brother Julian, who was taken to Germany as forced labour in April 1940 (when he was 19), knowing of that and fearing for his favourite horses, asked for a photo of them in a letter. Julian's fears turned out to be true on 19th January 1945 when the horses were taken by the retreating German troops ; The photo was taken on 17th August 1941 in their father's household in front of the stables by their cousin Józef Mitkowski from Sikorzyce ; The photo sent to the contest named “Photography of the Polish village pre-1948” organized in 1983 by the quarterly “Fotografia” (Photography) and the weekly “Nowa Wieś” (New village). Copy of the photo kept at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (former Institute for the History of Material Culture)
