Images of India and Pakistan

The presented collection “Images of India and Pakistan” is a private assemblage belonging to the author of the photos – Dagnosław Demski. The collection includes photos taken during the years 1984-1996 in various regions of North India and the Indian-Pakistan borderland. The economic development of this region of Asia has brought significant changes. Villagers, including tribes, have now gave up traditional farming activities and clothing. For this reason, a large part of the photos testify to the existence of what has disappeared or is disappearing from the landscape of the Indian countryside, including agricultural practices, rituals, residential structures or costumes. The selection encompasses photos grouped thematically. They have been sorted by date, place and the main theme of a particular group of records: the foothills of the Himalayas and Karakorum, the shepherds of Rabari, the Bhilian tribe, Jodhpur fortresses and palaces, the Warli tribe, the Kumbh Mela festival, the Sanjhi ceremony, as well as professional groups such as potters and weavers, or general topics such as Islam, cemeteries and tombs of the borderlands.
