Małe miasta są istotnym składnikiem w strukturze osadniczej regionów oraz stanowią centra obsługi dla otaczających je obszarów wiejskich. Współcześnie obserwuje się wzrost ich różnorodność funkcjonalnej, co wynika z przejmowania zadań dotychczas realizowanych w większych ośrodkach miejskich oraz dywersyfikacji społecznej i gospodarczej obszarów wiejskich. Celem opracowania jest omówienie podejść klasyfikacyjnych do małych miast w literaturze przedmiotu, które umożliwiają rozpoznanie ich stanu i różnorodności społecznej i gospodarczej oraz funkcji pełnionych na rzecz otaczających je obszarów wiejskich. Podejścia klasyfikacyjne podzielono na trzy grupy: strukturalne, lokalizacyjne i inne (mieszane). Podejście strukturalne pozwala bezpośrednio grupować miasta ze względu na ich funkcje społeczne, kulturowe i ekonomiczne, jakie pełnią wobec lokalnej społeczności i podmiotów gospodarczych działających w mieście i jego sąsiedztwie. W podejściu lokalizacyjnym wykorzystuje się zasadę kontinuum centrum-peryferia, czyli położenia małego ośrodka miejskiego wobec dużych centrów rozwojowych. Klasyfikacje mieszane wykorzystują równocześnie różne podejścia badawcze i niosą ze sobą najwięcej informacji o miastach. Na zakończenie zaproponowano autorską klasyfikację małych miast uwzględniającą trzy kryteria charakteryzujące: strukturę, lokalizację i hierarchię.
