It has been reported only once in Finland. In 2024, we initiated a search for additional finds of S. quercus in southern Finland. We focused on large birch (Betula pendula) and oak (Quercus robur) trees with deeply furrowed bark, as these provide suitable loci for the aphid, given the tree also harbours a colony of the obligate host ant. During our search, we examined 1962 birch trees and 448 oak trees with furrowed bark. We identified 13 colonies of L. fuliginosus, 10 of which contained S. quercus. Among these, seven S. quercus finds were on birch (mean trunk circumference at breast height 156 cm) and three on oak (mean circumference 253 cm). In conclusion, while S. quercus is rare in southern Finland, it is likely to be found there where L. fuliginosus is present on structurally suitable trees.}, title={Stomaphis quercus (Linnaeus) – the myrmecophilous oak aphid (Hemiptera, Aphididae, Lachninae) in Finland}, type={Text}, URL={http://www.rcin.org.pl/miiz/Content/263320/WA058_300404_P256_FF.pdf}, keywords={distribution, giant oak aphid, Lasius fuliginosus, mutualism, obligate myrmecophily}, }
