Social potential and its importance in development is the subject of research of both sociologists and geographers. The article addresses issues related to the relationship between the level of social potential and the degree of involvement of local communities in development. An analysis of ventures indicated by local communities to solve the diagnosed problems was also conducted. Data was used for municipalities indicated as problem areas and qualified for the so-called Special Inclusion Zone of Zachodniopomorskie Voivodeship from revitalization programs. The analysis also used statistical data from the Central Statistical Office to calculate the synthetic indicator of social potential. The results show that in areas with low social potential, residents show more revitalization initiatives, but are limited to infrastructural needs. Even though LiDAR has been used in the environmental sciences recently, studies using these methods in the analysis of landslides are numerous. The aim of the study was to determine the ability to identify landslides in the commune scale based on spatial data from airborne laser scanning within the framework of “Information System of the National Guards against extraordinary threats” (ISOK). The assumption of the applied method was to determine the landslides areas, without fieldwork mapping, based only on data obtained from point clouds and afterwards to verify gathered results. Two researchers, lacking knowledge concerning study area, prepared the Digital Elevation Model from the point clouds and based on these data recognized the landslides as well as hazardous areas. The second part of the research team who previously made a detailed terrain landslides mapping in the study area had the task of verifying the outcomes of the first stage. Subsequently, combined analysis of mistakes made be the first part of research team was carried out and the capabilities and limitations of the method was established. Comparison of materials obtained from diverse data sources permit to perform two-way verification of conducted research. Mistakes coming from either vague parts of point cloud’ DEM or terrain landslide mapping in forested areas were recognized. A multi-functional development of rural areas and implementation of knowledge-based economy contribute to the increase of education level among rural inhabitants. This paper is an attempt of a quantitative presentation of agriculture-related education among farm managers in Poland and identification of trends observed in this matter between 2002 and 2010, with a particular emphasis on the Kujawsko-pomorskie Voivodship. The analysis accounts for the number of farmers in five categories of education level, i.e.: (1) no agriculture-related education; (2) agriculture-related training course; (3) vocational education in agriculture; (4) vocational education in agriculture and post-agricultural education; (5) higher education in agriculture (university/technical university, etc.). With reference to the duration of agriculture-related education, conversion rates were used for the purposes of the analysis, which enabled construction of bonitation index concerning farm managers. The study of spatial differentiation of the observed patterns involved natural, urban and historical determinants. Polish rural areas are affected by the post-1990 transformation. The development of non-agricultural management and use is accompanied by the phenomena of spatial disintegration, disappearance of local landscape features along with increase of ecological and social risks. Hence, it is necessary to search for integrated methods and innovative tools to support and restore sustainability, coherence and diversity. Conclusions are based on a review of research. It has been pointed out that a development vision common to the local community determines shaping spatial order in a given territory. It is constructed by the means of mediation process. Its foundations were searched for in the approaches of rurality in the field of rural sociology and humanistic geography. Subsequently, the role of participation in spatial decision-making and the role of landscape impact in shaping the image of the territory were shown. The gathered arguments led to the conclusion that a development vision may arise in the process of participatory landscape management. The concept of renewal and revitalization of rural areas acquired a new dimension after Poland’s accession to the EU in 2004, when the influx of the UE funds radically altered the functioning of rural areas. The nature of the transformation took place at the touch of the individual cultural characteristics, its customs or local history, and new paradigms based on the European Union’s guidelines for shaping the space, functioning of the society and the rural environment. The article is therefore an attempt to answer the question concerning the impact of EU funds on the renewal and revitalization of rural areas in the program perspective 2007–2013, taking as an example the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodship. In the analysis, a special emphasis was placed on the so-called “problem areas” that potentially require higher investment. The data obtained from the Marshal’s Office of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodship were used in the study. These data concerned the implementation of the Rural Development Program 2007–2013, which envisages, among others, funds for the renewal and revitalization of rural areas. Only several places in the Central European space can be called new wilderness. Above all these are the MTA. The environmental history of these spaces went through a deep reversion. Changes in their cultural, political as well as social-economic profile can be compared with the specific belt of the former Iron Curtain zones only. Last two decades were essential for the physical existence of the MTAs. Because of the weak local political power, social capital and wide public support, are most of the decommitted MTAs in a deep conceptual crisis. The basic factor is temperature and the amount of radiation, which falls with increasing distance from the equator. Additionally, this basic relationship is overlaid by the specific features of the type of climate on the massif (degree of continentality or oceanity) and the mass-elevation effect. In the Carpathians, the mass elevation effectseems to have bigger impact on the location of timberline (R2 = 0.71, p = 0.00) than their latitudinal location (R2 = 0.56, p = 0.00). The timberline altitude changes by 70 m a.s.l. (±20 m) with each degree of latitude. The influenceof the type of the climate is complex and it is not clearly visible due to past and recent human impact. In 1997 the river flooded surrounding towns and villages. It was decided to build a reservoir that during successive flood states would protect residents. The aim of this study is to analyze the possibility of using water reservoir in Kluczbork municipality for recreation and tourism purposes. The results of two surveys conducted among residents of Ligota Zamecka have been analyzed. The residents could express their opinion about the project. The first questionnaire was conducted at the time when local community was only aware of the project to build retention and recreation reservoir in Kluczbork. The second survey was conducted when the reservoir was completed and filled with water. The results indicate the change in the attitude of inhabitants towards the reservoir – the opinions were mostly positive. They think that it would be a good promotion for the Kluczbork municipality. Moreover, the physico-chemical properties of water from the reservoir were examined. The samples were collected in the autumn and spring below the inlet of Stobrawa river into the preliminary tank and at the inlet into the main tank.
