The change in consumer behaviour and the need to adapt the offer to the increasing market requirements caused the need to take measures enhancing the competitiveness of horticulturists. One of them is the integration of producers. The authors presented changes in the organization of fruit and vegetable producers in Poland in 2004–2017. It was noticed that the Polish horticulturists prefer the southern European model of market organization, consisting in the existence of many small producer groups/organizations. In Poland after 2012, the number of fruit and vegetable producer groups/organizations and the number of members associated in them decreased. Fruit and vegetable producers by establishing the group most often indicated a neutral possibility of selecting the product category, including both fruits and vegetables in their offer. It was noticed that the groups that were liquidated were mostly homogeneous – they offered either fruits or vegetables. Attention is paid to the increase in of integration among mushroom producers. Mushrooms became one of the most important export products. Despite the shrinking number of producer organizations, those remaining on the market are characterized by a relatively stable market power. Changes in the number of producer organizations were larger than changes in the market share. Kay was used, allowing for quantification of the competitive advantage in terms of results. The article presents the outcome of the research, which covered all groups and producer organizations as of the end of 2014 from the Kujawsko-pomorskie Voivodeship and one integrated representative with apples in his offer, from the Mazowieckie, Wielkopolskie and Lubelskie Voivodeships. In order to obtain the financial data published in the National Court Register, Info Veriti calculated a competitive advantage meter according to J. Kay. Additionally, by means of logistic regression, the equation for the probability of obtaining a positive competitive advantage index was established. The results of the research indicate that only 38% of the surveyed organizations achieved a positive value of the measure, which proves that group activities do not guarantee achieving a competitive advantage. Logistic regression evidenced that increasing the accomplishing a positive competitive advantage index results in obtaining certificates confirming the quality and safety of products introduced to the market as well as investments increasing fixed assets. On the other hand, a decrease in the chance may result in the growing number of members. Its significance to the economy is emphasized in the voivodeship strategic documents, in which vegetable-growing is mentioned as one of the regional assets. Areas of its occurrence have been considered to present development potential. Vegetable cultivation in the Łódzkie Voivodeship occupies a relatively large area compared to the other regions. In years 2004–2016 the Łódzkie Voivodeship took the fourth place in terms of the area of vegetable cultivation and third place regarding share of vegetables in the sown area. Analyzed had the third largest share of vegetables in the value of total and market agricultural production. In the years 2004–2016, both the area of vegetable cultivation and the size of harvest in the Łódzkie Voivodeship decreased. The area of soil-grown vegetables cultivation decreased at an average rate of 2.9% per annum, while the size of crops decreased at an average rate of 1.0% a year. Despite the decline in the area of vegetable cultivation and the size of harvest, vegetable-growing remained an important part of the regional agricultural economy. In the analyzed period, vegetables accounted for 9.7% of the total value and 11.8% of the market value of agricultural production. Their share in the value of total and market production of agriculture, in contrast to the area and harvest, increased. The average growth rate of the share of vegetables in the value of total agricultural production was 2.9% per annum. The average growth rate of vegetables share in the value of market production was 2.1% per annum. In terms of participating in the value of total plant production, vegetables took the second place in Poland. Considering the share in the value of market production, vegetables were ranked first. The region’s vegetable growing area provides economic grounds for the functioning of the vegetable and fruit-vegetable processing industry for enterprises operating both in the Łódzkie Voivodeship and in the neighboring regions. In onnection with this, an urgent task is appropriate shaping of green areas to provide better living conditions in cities. In recent times, the idea of the vegetation in cities (including of spontaneous origin) being subject to naturalisation has gained strong promotion as urban greenspace is being planned. There are many examples of spontaneous vegetation forming an aspect of the planning of greenspace in Europe, the United States, and Poland also. However, differing views expressed by inhabitants act to limit the use – and level of acceptance – of urban areas’ spontaneous vegetation. Nevertheless, thanks to progressing ecological education, areas with synanthropic vegetation of a “more natural” character are proving increasingly acceptable to the public. . The research has concerned the 50-year period 1949-2001, with changes registered cartographically. At the landscape level, vegetation together with relief, water and soil conditions is a major deciding factor where the shaping of the environment is concerned. Vegetation offers direct indication as regards present-day landscape structure, as well as the most sensitive indication of both system dynamics and changes in the landscape, be these either natural or anthropogenic. Modifications of vegetation usually represent the first signs of environmental change. For these reasons, a knowledge and understanding of the factors and processes leading to the present state of vegetation provide for a determination of the potential effects of planned activities, and their influence on the natural environment. Over 35% of the area was found to have experienced changes in vegetation, though these changes varied in character and intensity from one part of the valley to another. Above all, however, the results of the analysis reflected changes in practices as regards agricultural land-use, this being particularly visible in the way that the area of segetal communities has declined markedly, in the wake of increases in the area of grassland, forest and scrub. Grassland communities themselves manifested two opposing directions to changes: on the one hand an intensification of meadow and pastures use leading to the decline or even disappearance of extensively-used meadows, and on the other the overgrowth of many abandoned grasslands by shrubs and trees. Similar processes have in fact been observed in other parts of Poland too (Herbich, 1994; Kucharski, 1999, 2000). Further detected changes in plant communities are indicative of a lowering of the water level or a change in the horizontal movement of water. The processes ongoing entail an evolution from communities with a high (or fluctuating) water level, often with stagnant water (e.g. Carex meadows, Molinia meadows and alder carr) to those characteristic of less moist habitats or those with running water (Arrhenatherum or Caltha meadows, ash-alder forests and ultimately oak-lime-hornbeam forest). This type of change has mostly been brought about by agricultural drainage. Other important processes observed in the valley as a whole entailed changes in aquatic habitats leading to the aggradation and overgrowth of river-channels and bodies of water. Indeed, the area encompassed by waters actually decreased by more than 32% during the study period. Aggradation of river-beds resulted from current concentration (via hydro-engineering construction) and the intensified accumulation of sediment. Overgrowth in bodies of water (mainly ox-bow lakes) in turn reflected embankment construction limiting the influence of flooding. There was a general increase in anthropisation of the landscape, though in some parts of the valley (e.g. the Wilga area) it was restoration processes that dominated - mainly due to land-cover changes, but also to modifications in plant communities that did not change their overall character (in that land-use forms remained the same), but did lead to changes as regards both structure and biodiversity. These changes above all involved the evolution of meadows into other grassland types subject to more intensive use, or else processes of degeneration in forests. The increasing anthropisation of vegetation was also a product of increases in the areas covered by ruderal vegetation or orchards. They provided the background for considering conditions for the functioning of juniper forest ecosystems. The uniqueness of these ecosystems also relies on the longevity of Juniperus seravschanica Kom., J. semiglobosa Regel and J. turkestanica Kom. Physiognomic features of the landscape are conditioned by the habitat, climate, landforms, and recently also by anthropopressure. The ecological, environmental and the cultural importance of juniper trees makes them a distinctive and determinant feature of the landscape. Currently juniper forests across Tajikistan, including those in the Zeravshan Mts., have been significantly disrupted as a result of chaotic, uncontrolled and excessive felling. The purpose of this article is to present natural conditions of juniper forest ecosystems, the impact of anthropogenic changes on their functioning as well as the occurrence of endemic species within them. The cultural importance of juniper in the protection of the surrounding landscape was also analysed. Part of the reason for that is relative rarity on the scale of Europe as a whole, and also in Poland. This in turn reflects the way in which fertile habitats were, in their majority, deforested long ago, drained and changed into grasslands or arable land. Additionally, the greater part of these habitats have lost their specific features, as a result of river engineering and – primarily – the construction of the river embankments that have acted to limit flooding and alluvial processes, in that way also initiating change in the composition of both soils and plant communities. Specifically, this article presents selected results of the research project: Riparian hardwood forest services in the middle Vistula river valley. One of the main objectives thereof was to assess the condition of forest ecosystems from which flooding has now been absent for at least 50 years, as well as to prepare guidelines for actions necessary to maintain or restore their diversity, and proper ecological and biological functions. Our research questions therefore revolved around components of riparian hardwood forest ecosystems have been most changed … and why? The research was conducted in six riparian hardwood forests (to date unmonitored) located in the valley of the middle Vistula (in Mazowieckie voivodship). Relevant work was carried out using the standard monitoring guidelines – as primarily based on an assessment of vegetation composition and structure together with water conditions. However, in the work in question, these were augmented by additional analyses allowing for detailed characterisations of soil, the topoclimate, and the species diversity achieved by selected groups of invertebrate (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Bombus and Haplotaxida: Lumbricidae). The communities selected represent multi-functional, species-rich forests. Extensive use of the studied riparian mixed forests ensures that deadwood resources are quite considerable. Moreover, the studied forests exert a strong impact when it comes to mitigation of climate locally. The observed soil types indicate fertile and biologically-active habitats, as well as to soil development largely determined by the height of the groundwater table causing the gleyic process in the lower parts of profiles. However, in some forest patches it is possible to note transformations related to habitat drying, with significant canopy gaps and disturbances of topsoil and the undergrowth. There was a great abundance of invasive alien plant species (mainly Impatiens parviflora) in the undergrowth. Moisture conditions have an impact on the occasional occurrence of Lumbricidae associated with wet and flooded areas. In turn, the domination by Bombus of open-habitat species indicates a transformation of forest structure, and the patchy nature of riparian forests located in a rural landscape. The obtained results demonstrate that protective actions should focus on ensuring adequate soil-moisture conditions, and on restoring the natural structure of vegetation with a view to invasions of alien species being hampered. Another important issue is the proper use of land adjacent to forest patches, as fallows prove to be invaded quickly by the kenophytes preferring abandoned and disturbed places.
