TY - GEN N1 - 24 cm N2 - The aim of this study is to analyze the quality of hotel enterprises’ services located in the rural areas of the Opolskie Voivodship and to examine new trends concerning leisure in the region’s countryside. The following research methods were involved: documentary method and field research aiming at inventory of hotel enterprises located in rural areas, diagnostic survey including in-depth interviews and guests’ opinion analysis. The study was conducted from February to March 2017. The spatial extent of the study comprised rural areas of the Opolskie Voivodship. It was found that increased interest in leisure in rural hotel enterprises results from the extension of offered services and adaptation to customers’ needs. These conclusions follow the latest trends observed in tourism related to improving the quality of services. Increasingly, the idea does not affect only a single farm, but engages broader rural community, providing possibility to earn money and integrate. An idea implementing local resources is to develop an original offer that will drive the development of rural tourism, based on the concept of thematic villages. Creating a leitmotif of a village is an innovative way to stimulate rural economy and provide alternative sources of income for local inhabitants. Within the framework of a common project, local community learns to cooperate, care for the village and jointly establish village’s brand. The research presented in the article concerns about 80 villages of the Dolnośląskie Voivodeship, which have adopted a given theme to create individual tourist offer. The analyzes undertaken by the author are focused on the issues of establishing thematic villages in terms of their specialization, stage of development, variety of proposed offers or organization of cyclical events. The starting point and point of reference in the following sections of the discussion is settlement geography - geographical discipline with a very long tradition and unquestionable research achievements as well as cognitive and applied values. In each case, the contribution of settlement geography to the development of transdisciplinary research and the understanding of rural renewal within them are underlined. The next link to consider should be treated as an original research project associating geographic knowledge with the one produced in contact with other disciplines. A complementary element, embedded in the structure of the study is the description of four research problems that should be considered as examples of good geographical practices. These are the possibilities for using different concepts in the development of a comprehensive rural renewal research program from the perspective of settlement geography L1 - http://www.rcin.org.pl/igipz/Content/65997/PDF/WA51_85005_r2017-t48_SOW-Wojcik.pdf M3 - Text J2 - Studia Obszarów Wiejskich = Rural Studies, t. 48 PY - 2017 EP - 20 KW - rural renewal KW - research concepts KW - settlement geography A1 - Wójcik, Marcin PB - PAN IGiPZ PB - PTG VL - 48 CY - Warszawa SP - 9 T1 - Odnowa wsi jako przedmiot badań geograficzno-osadniczych = Rural renewal as a study field of settlement geography UR - http://www.rcin.org.pl/igipz/dlibra/publication/edition/65997 ER - TY - GEN N1 - 24 cm N2 - This article presents results of an analysis and a survey of selected landscape elements carried out under the village restoration programme. The spatial scope of the study includes the suburban village of Ługwałd located within the community of Dywity (Warmia and Mazury Province). As a part of the research, a detailed survey of the village was conducted, as well as an analysis concerning the extension of the locality, an analysis and a survey of the buildings and a social survey in the local community. The article presents the issue of contemporary transformations of suburban areas in Poland along with spatial arrangement and aesthetisation of the rural landscape with regard to the village restoration programme. This programme provides an excellent tool to improve landscape values of the locality, but most often, it only results in arrangement of public spaces and not in their restoration, aesthetisation or assigning individual features with reference to the traditions of the region. In order to use the opportunity provided by the programme, an insight analysis of cultural and natural conditions of transformed areas should first be performed. A hilly area, numerous trees, arable fields, extensive meadows and lakes form the landscape of high natural values, which is the key resource of Ługwałd. Decreasing agricultural activities, as well as a strong population inflow have resulted in strong anthropogenic changes and the introduction of buildings which had no references to the architecture of the region, with observable blurring of individual features of the area and introduction of disharmony downgrading individual interiors and panorama of the village. Measures should be taken with the aim of improving spatial order and harmony between the existing and newly-designed buildings, and attempts should be made to activate the local community, bearing in mind the fact that village restoration should also include the human factor. The analyses conducted provided a basis to prepare a design concept for aesthetisation of the village. Initiation of rural development programmes successfully activates processes of modernisation in many fields of social and economic life, including the material base (infrastructure), which is an essential element in the functioning of settlement systems. The aim of this study is to present selected results of the expert analysis of 50 Polish villages, which are characterised by a high concentration of cultural values – material, institutional and spiritual. The assessment of a group of rural settlements was meant to determine the potential for creating the Network of the Most Interesting Villages. The article presents the factual basis for such evaluation, the differentiation in groups of villages according to selected traits, especially those describing the infrastructural plane for developing the tourism and recreational functions. The recipe for success includes many elements. The most important ones include attractive spatial configuration in which there is no shortage of central locations that are the focus of educational and recreational functions, the social awareness of the value of one’s own heritage and the ability to describe it (the purpose of stay), the existence of long-lasting institutions referring to the historical memory and communal activities, the ability to create the media for narration placed in the internal environment, somewhat-formed path of its own development based on own resources (developed tourism functions), as well as participation in local and regional network of town with varying functions, and natural and anthropogenic environmental values (tourist regions). Selected problems of rural renewal in Poland UR - http://www.rcin.org.pl/igipz/dlibra/publication/edition/61814 ER - TY - GEN N1 - 24 cm N2 - Village refurbishment is a method of developing rural areas, which focuses on creating developmental strategies through grassroots initiatives and engagement of all interested parties on the local, regional and national levels. This process involves bringing about living conditions for entire local communities, creative development of spaces adjusted to the modern needs and fulfilling new functions. Social and economic changes, involving living areas and their surroundings, infrastructure, open-access spaces, services and meeting the living and spiritual needs are a measurable effect of these activities. Such initiatives have been popular and widespread in the European Union for over 20 years and the financial resources from the so-called Rural Development Program have served as direct support tools. The elaborated concepts and projects, based on using local resources and qualities, have been implemented within the scope of the Program for Renewal of Rural Areas as a regional system supporting the village administrative offices. The Opolskie Voivodship has become the Polish leader in such activities. Thanks to partnership cooperation with the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, local administrative authorities implemented the first projects on the renewal of rural areas in the mid-1990s. The successful ventures were inspirational for other local authorities and while Poland accessed the European Union and new potential for financial support arrived, different projects were launched all over the country. The Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodship is actively involved in the Program for Renewal of Rural Areas, which has the slogan “The countryside in Warmia, Mazury and Powiśle – a place in which life is worth living…”. This paper presents the effects of the activities undertaken by different entities aimed at improving the image of the countryside and living conditions of Wejsuny residents. These evoke pronounced changes in rural landscape, including its basic element, the village. Varied effects of transformation are visible in the village’s image and unfortunately, they are most often negative. As an aftermath, one observes obliteration of the place’s tradition, distinctiveness and regional specificity of rural areas. Taking action for rural renewal or revitalization requires a series of research and analysis to identify sources of the problems occurring in the village. Regarding diagnosis for village state, a special emphasis is put upon territorial, natural and social conditions. In turn, the process of developing recovery strategy, its initiation and implementation necessarily requires involvement of local community. Identification of rural landscape distinguishing features in the analysis procedure serves to clarify the vision for the development of a given area. Distinguishing marks of the rural landscape can become the basis or inspiration in developing the concept of revitalization, at the same time preserving village’s historical assets. The article presents the above mentioned issues and considers the differences between rural renewal and revitalization. Discussion is based upon data acquired by the means of conducted analysis concerning two villages located in the Opolskie Voivodeship: Złotogłowice and Różyna. This kind of rural renewal is a consequence of specific valorising rural resources by important local actors. Spycimierz is a village that builds its potential based on the tradition of laying floral carpets once a year during the feast of Corpus Christi. The process of rural renewal of this locality, with the choice of local authorities and inhabitants themselves, concentrates on activities related to the role of the rite and promoting it outside. This seems to be rather narrowed, as inventory of local resources also indicates other valuable assets to be found in Spycimierz. Among the outcomes of this process, one can list e.g. social integration, support for local initiatives, socio-economic revival or decreased disproportion in spatial development. These changes are encapsulated in the processes of rural revitalization and renewal, which are most expedient in areas suffering from social, economic and spatial degradation. The study aims to determine the role of embeddedness of an enterprise in the local environment in the processes of rural revitalization and renewal (a case study of Działyń in Kłecko commune, Wielkopolskie Voivodeship). Działyń is a former state agricultural farm with a historic site comprising local cultural heritage. It houses Działpol, an agricultural company established as an outcome of transforming a prior state agricultural farm, now a modern biogas plant. The analysis has shown that initiatives undertaken and supported by companies demonstrating their incorporation with the local environment and practices, including participation enhancing local resources and infrastructure, as well as undertakings integrating local community, or provision of other local services prove that embeddedness of enterprises in the local environment is pivotal when implementing the processes of rural revitalization and renewal. Given the explosive transformation of the modern countryside, there is an urgent need to find effective tools and methods to protect its cultural heritage. This protection cannot be limited to "freezing" historical forms; it should involve proactive measures affecting the quality of the landscape and the functionality of those areas, which can significantly increase their development potential. The relevant landscape research was conducted in the Długa Goślina village in the Wielkopolska Province. After identifying resources of the village's cultural landscape and determining state of their behaviour and analysing planning documents, an attempt was made to identify the opportunities and the threats to the area’s development. The aim of the research was to identify activities within the framework of village renewal, as potential development scenarios, possibly also implemented in other settlement units. Długa Goślina has features typical of a Wielkopolska village: the agricultural function limited to residential and service functions, which causes a deformation of the historical village pattern. But in terms of resources, its cultural landscape has a considerable diversity of values, which when properly interpreted and developed, can be an important basis of local development. For the village under study, preliminary conservation works were proposed. Once the public accepts these activities and effective implementation of them, it will be possible to prepare a scenario for the development of cultural tourism. Given the functioning of agricultural holdings and close market, optional or parallel development would be based on the concept of organic farming. It seems that the proposed development directions for Długa Goślina have a universal character and, when properly adapted to the local conditions prevailing in other settlements, can be used in village renewal projects in Wielkopolska.
