The authors attempts to answer questions regarding progress with the disintegration of a given type of rock over time; the size and shape of weathered grains; the role played by fissures in rock and rock texture; and further relevant properties like compressive and tensile strength, porosity and water absorption. The rock samples used in laboratory testing were collected in the catchment area of the Chochołowski Stream in the Western Tatra Mountains of Poland. The seven types of rock analysed were white and brown granite, organodetric limestone, fine-grained conglomerate, dolomite breccia, quartzite sandstone and amphibolite. Samples were subjected to simulated frost weathering via the impact of repeated thermal cycles across a temperature range of -5 to +10°C. The simulation was carried out at the Low Temperatures Laboratory of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Management of Kraków’s Jagiellonian University, using a CI/1400/LT/2D cooling device. As testing was in progress, changes in the states of samples were determined through the measurement of dry and saturated mass and water absorption, as well as the speed at which an ultrasonic wave passed through. By reference to results for these measures, it was possible to calculate the frost weathering index after Matsuoke, i.e.:Rf= (Vp0-Vpk)/(Vp0*k) [cykle -1],where Vp0 is wave speed at cycle 0 (in km/s), Vpk is wave speed at cycle k (km/s) and k is the number of cycles. Rock dissolution tests and measurements of the products of weathering were also carried out. Values obtained for the index were used to rank the rocks tested for their resistance to frost weathering, as was the percentage of material in the initial mass that became subject to rock weathering. The least-resistant rock proved to be dolomite breccia, and the most-resistant amphibolites and quartzite sandstones. The rankings of other rocks varied in line with the indicative parameter referred to. The testing of physical properties suggested several reasons for high resistance to frost weathering among the analysed types of rock from the Western Tatras, i.e. the limited (<5%) open porosity noted for all types, limited water absorption, high compressive and tensile strength, compactness and homogeneity, low densities of fissures in samples in their initial state, almost complete filling of pores with matrix (e.g. in sandstone and conglomerate), re-filling of cracks (e.g. in limestone), and a significant component of resistant quartz. No effect of rock texture on resistance to frost weathering could be observed, but the presence of carbon matrix and carbonate rock fragments is important. The latter dissolve steadily, creating more favourable conditions for physical weathering (e.g. of amphibolites and conglomerates). The occurrence of mineral veins within rocks determines disintegration routes (e.g. in conglomerates). Given that rocks were subjected to an average of 850 repeated thermal cycles in the laboratory, the simulation achieved was of approx. 50 years of frost weathering under natural conditions in the study area. Experiments of this kind thus offer insight into processes running very slowly under natural conditions. Such an analysis of weather conditions allows for determination of the influence of the whole set of meteorological elements on the human body, in particular when the bioclimatic indices are calculated on the basis of the human heat balance. The paper concerns the assessment of weather conditions in central-western Poland in terms of tourism and recreation, made with the use of biothermal-meteorological weather classification including weather types, subtypes and classes. The calculations were made on the basis of meteorological data of second measurement date (12 UTC) in the period 1971-2006. In the analysed period, there were from 112 (Gorzów Wlkp.) to 130 (Słubice, Koło) types of weather recorded. Among all determined weather types, the 20 which were most commonly observed determined the weather conditions on more than 80% of days in a year. On the basis of the adopted bio-thermal-and-meterorological classification, a seasonal regularity of weather conditions occurrence was shown. The conducted analyses have shown that the highest variety of weather conditions was observed in summer, followed closely by spring and autumn, and the least in winter. The periods of different suitability for the selected forms of recreations, as identified with the use of WEI index, can be useful for planning and optimal spending of one’s leisure time outdoors on the area of central-western Poland. Two periods most favourable for sunbathing were identified i.e., from the second decade of April to the first decade of June, and from the first decade of August to the end of the fi rst decade of October. The most favourable conditions for air bathing occurred in Poznań, and the worst in Zielona Góra and Leszno, where the favourable conditions were found only in the first and second decade of May. The analysis of weather conditions showed that in the case of air bathing (AR), the favourable conditions were found from the beginning of the third decade of April to the first decade of October on most of the analysed area, and in Poznań and Słubice till the second decade of October. As for moderate recreation, favourable weather conditions were identified on 74% of days in a year with the maximum in April and October. In the case of active reaction, conditions identified on the basis of the index as favourable or very favourable occurred throughout the year. The aim of this paper is to provide a detailed synoptic analysis of a severe weather event, a waterspout, and to confirm an indication that in most cases such events could potentially be forecasted, which is of great practical significance, since human lives and property can be saved. The paper presents the research results of synoptic and mesoscale weather conditions which created a favourable meteorological environment for a waterspout development in Tivat (Montenegrin coast) on June 9, 2018, around 01 UTC (03 CET). Based on field survey analysis, the rating of tornado intensity by the Fujita scale (F-scale) has been done by assessing the damage. The synoptic type for this situation was CLOSED-SW and was determined by a detailed examination of atmospheric circulation. The results presented in the manuscript can help decision makers in Montenegro to take certain adaptation measures (above all, in tourism and construction) in order to mitig te the negative consequences of weather extremes.
