Analysis was based around daily river discharges at water–gauges located along 40 rivers in numerous different regions of Poland (Fig. 2), and deemed to be representative of various kinds of hydrological regime. The data spanned the 1951-2010 period, though time series for particular river catchments were in fact in the 48- to 60-year range. The data in question were made subject to calculations of coefficients for the correlation between simultaneous series describing characteristic specific river runoffs and values of Hurrell’s NAO index. However, assessment also accounted for inertia of specific river runoff, by using cross-correlation coefficients, and most especially the relationship between studied specific river runoff and values for the NAO index recorded in the preceding year. The statistical significances of correlation and cross–correlation coefficient values were assessed using the Student t test ( = 0.05). The correlation between values for the Hurrell index and weighted average specific runoff from Poland was also analysed. A key research finding was that the largest number of statistically-significant correlation coefficients (19 and 14 respectively) were obtained when Hurrell’s NAO index was set against maximum or mean specific river runoffs (Fig. 4). In contrast, the NAO is shown to have a rather minor impact on minimum specific river runoff in Poland (with significance achieved for data from just 3 catchments). Asynchronicity to the relationship between the NAO and characteristic runoff in Poland was also observed, though it needs stressing that the NAO primarily influences specific river runoff in southern Poland, with only a more minor influence on runoff in the lowland and lakeland regions of central and northern Poland. The calculated cross–correlation method largely failed to reveal inertia of the analysed characteristic specific river runoff, with no statistically significant correlation being obtained between Hurrell index values and weighted average specific runoff from Poland. Equally, several-year periods with an asynchronous relationship between the NAO and weighted average specific runoff from Poland were to be noted between 1960 and 2010. The data came from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management - National Research Institute (IMGW-PIB). Using the Mann-Kendall test and the directional coefficient β expressed by the Theil-Sen estimator, a multi-temporal trend analysis was carried out, which allowed to determine the direction, significance and strength of flow trends and indicate the periods in which the direction of trends reversed. A multi-temporal trend analysis allows for the calculation of periods covering every possible combination of the beginning and end year. The minimum duration of the calculation period is 20 years. The changes observed in average river runoff were fluctuating in nature and in large part were statistically insignificant. In the case of maximum flows the decreasing tendencies were prevalent, while in the case of minimal flows increasing tendencies were. On the Bug, much of the analyzed trends were statistically significant. In the surveyed for many years, the trend changed twice, around 1965 and 1980. The area of the sub-catchment was characterised by a 40% share of impermeable surfaces, a large portion of which are equipped witha stormwater drainage system. The article presents the calculation procedure applied in a computer program developed by the author, which can be used to simulate flows on the basis of the SBUH model. The scope of the work included determination of parameters of the model (tc, Kr), using the iterative method for 13 selected rainfall-runoff events measured in the catchment during the 2006-2008 period. As parameters of the model were determined, no differences between measured and simulated maximal flows were noted, while parameters calculated for the individual analyzed rainfall-runoff events were found to vary markedly. The data obtained were used to devise a formula providing for calculation of the retention coeffi cient for the reservoir (Kr), as well as the time of concentration (tc) based on the coefficient, and calculated in relation to the maximum intensity of effective rainfall. Values for the time of concentration calculated using the formula ranged from 0.417 to 1.291 h, with a mean value of 0.707 h. Mean values for concentrations determined using the iterative method were found to be the same as those obtained through application of the formula described above. The times of concentration calculated using the formula were applied in simulating maximum flows using the SBUH model, with values found to range between 5.609 and 24.385 m3 s–1. The average value for the maximum flow of 10.343 m3 s–1 did not differ much from the average value of measured fl ows (9.847 m3 s–1).Maximum flows calculated using the model were compared with those measured in the fi eld, in this way making possible an assessment of the calculation procedure and the SBUH model. Relative error values established on the basis of these flows ranged from–28.3 to 87.6% (8.9% on average). Relative errors of flow simulations for the 9 eventsdid not exceed 15%. The results obtained confirm the suitability of the SBUH model forsimulating flow hydrographs in the urbanized Służewiecki Stream sub-catchment.
