The conceptual framework is based on discussion of the role of metropolises. To provide a broad geographical scope the ORBIS database has been used, and its value has been discussed. The analysis shows that headquarters in capital cities were still attracting the greatest amount of foreign direct investment as of 2013, even when considerations are set at the level of different types of activity sector. Transformation of these areas is an ongoing process, resulting in changing their functions. Growing diversity of agriculture gives way to increasing multi-functionality of rural areas. Along with the progressive development processes in rural areas, significance of various functions – not yet accentuated – is being revealed and amplified. The study presents functional transformation of rural areas on the example of Pomerania region. These areas have enhanced their socio-economic, environmental, cultural and spatial functions. The aim of this study is to define changes taking place in individual functions of rural areas and their mutual relations. Agriculture and forestry play an important role in rural areas, acting as a basis for natural resource management and development of the rural landscape. The article illustrates classifications of village and agriculture functions based on various criteria. Significant role of emerging new functions in the villages of the studied area, often innovative and prospective, influencing further development of Pomeranian rural areas was emphasized. Fundamental condition for the development of the researched villages is to increase their diversity, in particular by enriching the socio-economic functions. Rural areas are currently facing numerous challenges and the driving force for their development lies within activity of their residents. The aim was also to analyze changes in the borders of the studied villages. The research was carried out in four stages. The first stage consisted in the acquisition and preparation of data on the land use structure in 1848, 1880, and 2016 for two research facilities (Kryspinów and Kaszów). The selection of objects located peripherally to Kraków allowed to study changes in land cover in the period of 1848‑2016 and an attempt to assess the impact of distance from the city on the direction and dynamics of land use change in rural areas. In the second stage, the analysis of administrative borders of examined cities was conducted. The third stage consisted in analyzing land use changes based on the cartographic part of the so-called Franciscan cadastre, created in the first half of the 19th century for the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The source of information for 1880 was the Geographical Dictionary of the Slavic Countries. Modern data was obtained from the Topographic Database (BDOT10k). In the fourth stage, the research was summarized. The analysis of spatial land use changes was carried out using geoprocessing tools. A descriptive-comparative method and simple statistical methods were also employed. It was confirmed that changes in land use take place more intensively in the villages in the close vicinity to Kraków. Less significant changes were noted in the next distance zone, in which the area was not subject to direct pressure from the suburbanisation process. Observed historical changes in land use confirm the generally observed tendency related to the growth of built-up and urbanized areas, wasteland and lands sheltered at the expense of farmland in the Małopolskie Voivodeship. For a long time local authorities were not recognizing the potential of the village despite of numerous tourist attractions (main square, barns, old church, limestone outlier – ‘Rock of love’), the village was not considered as tourists’ object of interests. One of the first steps regarding revitalization was cleaning up riverside land near the ‘Rock of love’ and purification of artificial lake. New walking paths and the beach started to attract tourists. Nearby, the river fish bar was opened and another restaurant appeared near the main square. The next step consisted of ‘Outdoor design” workshops, during which students from Silesian universities considered how to improve the quality of public space. Local authorities have taken care of creating corporate design for Mstów and set up ‘Apple Fest’ – an annual event for merchandising fruits planted by local fruit farmers. An interest in village’s history also occurred. In 2012 Mstów was celebrating 800th anniversary of bishops’ congress, during this event lectures about history of the village, church and local order were given. Archeological and ethnographic researches were initiated. Historical barn district was a master thesis’ topic of the author. Revitalization and local authorities’ interest has brought positive effect. Event related to local farming is advertising the village, which is also growing in tourism. The villagers have become interested in history of Mstów and seen cultural value of the place, they are live in. Despite all the effort, there are still a lot to improve. Barn district is deteriorating and may vanish soon. Interest from local authorities and inhabitants is needed, because they do not see these building as a local heritage.
