The volume to which lake basins are filled with water is of major importance to the courses of many processes and phenomena. A particular amount of water in a lake, and water-table stability, are also important from the point of view of human activity, as these elements help determine the quantity and accessibility of the water resources lakes have to offer, and therefore the possibilities for them to be used by different branches of the economy, e.g. industry, agriculture or tourism. The work detailed here is thus a presentation of trends as regards water-level fluctuations in 16 lakes in Poland, over the period 1956–2015. The study results, obtained for the first time in relation to such a long time scale and extending to around a dozen lakes, aim to point to the scale and direction of water-level fluctuations in times of the intensive transformation of the natural environment. They were obtained by reference to water-level observations made by the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management – National Research Institute (IMiGW-PIB). Specifically, data referring to the (November-October) hydrological year were analysed for trends as regards mean annual water levels using the Mann-Kendall test. Results point to major variability in the courses noted for these levels over the analysed multiannual period. Nevertheless, three overall situations could be designated from within the group of cases analysed, i.e. increase, decrease or lack of a trend. The first group includes Lakes Sławskie, Jamno, Łebsko, Nidzkie, and Studzieniczne (where increases were statistically significant at p=0.05); the second, Lakes Ostrzyckie and Ełckie (decreases significant at p=0.05); and the last group all remaining lakes, i.e. Charzykowskie, Jeziorak and Rajgrodzkie, Biskupińskie, Drwęckie and Białe, Gopło, Roś, and Wigry. It was, however, noted that in many cases analysed periods of alternating increase and decrease in water level were to be observed. The causes of such fluctuations were complex, but inter alia reflected droughts of several years’ duration, periods featuring higher-than-average precipitation, and local conditions. In general, water-level fluctuations in lakes result from natural and anthropogenic factors determining the hydrological conditions in catchments. And in the context of the lakes considered here, the courses of water-level fluctuations were mostly a reflection of local, rather than wider climatic conditions – a fact i.a. illustrated by the lack of cohesive regional designations. The situation is different from that of, for example, the thermal or ice regimes of Polish lakes, in relation to which observed similarities in properties are seen to be determined mainly by climatic factors. Information of this kind may be of key importance to the (quantitative and qualitative) management of water resources in the context of the climate change being observed currently. Accessible transport infrastructure (mainly the motorway network) has influenced many decisions concerning the location of industrial investments. The impact of transport infrastructure on the reduction of regional disparities in Slovakia is limited mainly due to the concentration of transport infrastructure investment in the more developed regions of Slovakia. Poorer regions in eastern Slovakia and the southern part of Central Slovakia are still affected by the unfavourable level of accessibility to the transport infrastructure that creates important conditions affecting their development. Using data of mean daily values of PM10 and calendar of circulation types for Western Poland drafted by T. Niedźwiedź (2003), made it possible to show the most and least favorable situations occurrence of high particulate matter concentration. The most preferred situation for pollution accumulation is the advection from the southern sector. The lowest values of PM10 appeared in the case of northern types of circulation. It was also shown that exceeding the permissible daily values of 50 μg m−3 (according to Directive 2008/50/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 21 May 2008 on ambient air quality and cleaner air for Europe) occur much more frequently in the case of anticyclonic types of circulation. Mean values of PM10 in different seasons, confirmed the presence of the highest concentrations in winter, what is associated with an increase of emissions from municipal sector, as well as increase of frequency of circulation types from the South at this time of year. The aim of the study is to present natural and demographic conditions of spatial management in selected rural areas and to assess their predisposition for development of agriculture, tourism and locating industry. Three selected communes of the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship with diverse characteristics of natural environment and varied functional structure were examined The CSO (GUS) statistical data, available cartographic material, environmental studies and field prospection were employed. The analysis was conducted within two thematic blocks, including: • evaluation of selected components and characteristics of natural environment and its functioning, • evaluation of demographic and social phenomena. Environmental and demographic conditions for spatial management in selected rural areas are diverse. Evaluation of natural environment classification proves that all areas present mediocre predispositions for development of agriculture and Stąporków commune is the only one with considerable potential for tourism development and locating industry. The most favorable demographic situation for major forms of economy (agriculture, industry investment) occurs in Pawłów commune, while the least desired in Stąporków commune, where contemporary demographic processes can only favor tourism (e.g. leisure, health resort). Evaluation of local conditions of the natural and demographic environment allowed to indicate optimal directions for development of selected communes. This is only possible if the potential of the natural environment is properly assessed. However, economic development is impossible with the progressive degradation of demographic potential. Environmental and demographic determinants should be the basis when planning the functions of a commune. The subject of this paper is the relation between level of social resources in the areas in which local action groups’ work (in provinces with historically varied social activist traditions, i.e. the Western and Northern Territories, on the one hand, and Galicia and Greater Poland, on the other hand) and their social capital. The aim of the article is to find the answers to the following questions: Does the location of those organisations in provinces with historically varied social activist traditions determine their different access to social resources? Do the deficits of social resources in the areas supported by those organisations have a negative influence on their social capital? In order to find the answers to these questions, 287 survey questionnaires filled in by members of 18 local action groups were analysed. All the questions were answered negatively. The findings were interpreted with reference to the concept of bricolage, which showed it from a new perspective. Initiation of rural development programmes successfully activates processes of modernisation in many fields of social and economic life, including the material base (infrastructure), which is an essential element in the functioning of settlement systems. The aim of this study is to present selected results of the expert analysis of 50 Polish villages, which are characterised by a high concentration of cultural values – material, institutional and spiritual. The assessment of a group of rural settlements was meant to determine the potential for creating the Network of the Most Interesting Villages. The article presents the factual basis for such evaluation, the differentiation in groups of villages according to selected traits, especially those describing the infrastructural plane for developing the tourism and recreational functions. The recipe for success includes many elements. The most important ones include attractive spatial configuration in which there is no shortage of central locations that are the focus of educational and recreational functions, the social awareness of the value of one’s own heritage and the ability to describe it (the purpose of stay), the existence of long-lasting institutions referring to the historical memory and communal activities, the ability to create the media for narration placed in the internal environment, somewhat-formed path of its own development based on own resources (developed tourism functions), as well as participation in local and regional network of town with varying functions, and natural and anthropogenic environmental values (tourist regions). The survey was attended by secondary school students across the examined region. Questions asked in the survey focused on young people's perception of their place of residence, their anticipation for further education, career, and chances on the labor market. The study also allowed to examine factors that affect decisions of young people on their future in terms of family and professional life, as well as future place of residence. Research findings allowed to observe processes referring to theoretical concepts, such as the central place theory of Walter Christaller and growth poles theory of Francois Perroux. In the Mazowieckie Voivodship, Warsaw is the strongest growth pole that attracts young people in terms of career and place of residence. The most important factors determining young people’s decisions on their career path and place of residence are the possibilities of further education and feelings in terms to their labor market opportunities. The study results showed that students consider higher education as providing most advantage on the labor market. However, nowadays acquiring higher education does not ensure employment as much as several years before. Statistics of unemployment in Poland show that the growth in the number of unemployed is the greatest among people with higher education. Expansion of education opportunities and its accessibility have contributed to the increase in education level of rural population. The same circumstances resulted in the enhancement of their aspirations and expectations concerning employment. This is also the reason for the increasing scale of migrations, especially among young women. The reasons for migration of youth to regional growth poles, mostly to Warsaw and its metropolitan area, are: low attractiveness of rural and peripheral areas reflecting in limited opportunities for personal growth, low availability of various services and low transport accessibility. The study area was located near Rogajny in the Suwałki Lake District, where 54 permanent study plots were established in a homogeneous field (Dd) and in a mosaic of small fields and balks (Dm). The earthworms were collected in spring and autumn over a two-year period (2007–2008), from blocks of soil measuring 25×25×30 cm. Soil samples were collected from the same sampling points as the earthworms. Both, qualitative and quantitative parameters of earthworm assemblages showed the same trends, thus appearing to be equally reflective. The complex arable landscape site supported higher earthworm diversity, abundance and biomass than the homogeneous arable landscape. The spring and autumn earthworm sampling campaigns revealed very different patterns. We conclude that species richness is determined mostly by spatial structure of agrocenosis mosaics, whilst abundance and biomass of earthworm community is mainly influenced by soil conditions. Comparisons between data and formulating conclusions should be made with great care, as these relations depend on the temporal scales to a large extent.
