The climate and geomorphological evolution of this area suggest that both past and current frost processes play an important role here. Furthermore, not far from this massif – in the Tatra Mts – permafrost was detected at an altitude of ca. 2000 m a.s.l., in an area where mean annual air temperature (MAAT) drops to minus 0.8°C. The MAAT at the summit of Babia Gora is likewise below 0°C. Given that long-term freezing of the massif in the glacial period reached down to considerable depths, the climatic evolution of the massif indicates that permafrost could have lasted through to the present time. In the study area three resistivity profiles were made using the resistivity imaging method. Two of these were 300 m long and one 400 m. The depth of interpretation extends to approx. 90 m below the ground surface in the last case. While the results of the geophysical surveys do not confirm the presence of permafrost in the study area unambiguously, its presence may not be precluded in certain places in the shallow subsurface layer. The permafrost originating in older geological periods and located at greater depth was probably exposed to relatively rapid degradation, given the geological structure of Babia Góra allowing for deep water drainage. Resistivity models shows the geological structure of the research area close to the summit of Babia Góra, but do not resolve the issue of the existence of modern or fossil permafrost. The temperature of the water in springs located close to the summit is almost constant, though, and does not exceed 1°C. This shows that water circulation is a relatively deep one, and the temperature within the massif cannot therefore be higher than this. The existence of permafrost is not therefore precluded, and this might be possible in the form of the cryotic state. The measurements made present only the first approach to the hypothesis regarding the possible existence of permafrost on Babia Góra, and further research applying other, complementary methods may still change views on this subject. It is recalled how – at the moment a Polish state first came into being in the 10th century – its western border also followed a course more or less coinciding with these same two rivers. In subsequent centuries, the political limits of the Polish and German spheres of influence shifted markedly to the east. However, as a result of the drastic reverse suffered by Nazi Germany, the western border of Poland was re-set at the Oder-Neisse Line. Consideration is given to both the causes and consequences of this far-reaching geopolitical decision taken at the Potsdam Conference by the victorious Three Powers of the USSR, UK and USA L1 - http://www.rcin.org.pl/igipz/Content/53298/PDF/WA51_72321_r2015-t88-no1_G-Polonica-Eberhardt.pdf M3 - Text J2 - Geographia Polonica Vol. 88 No. 1 (2015) PY - 2015 IS - 1 EP - 105 KW - Oder-Neisse Line (Germany and Poland) KW - western border of Poland KW - Potsdam Conference (1945) KW - international boundaries A1 - Eberhardt, Piotr (1935–2020) PB - IGiPZ PAN VL - 88 CY - Warszawa SP - 77 T1 - The Oder-Neisse line as Poland’s western border: As postulated and made a reality UR - http://www.rcin.org.pl/igipz/dlibra/publication/edition/53298 ER - TY - GEN N1 - 24 cm N2 - The aim of this study is to characterize pluvial conditions in the Wielkopolskie Voivodeship at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. The work comprises analysis of the long-term, annual and seasonal precipitation, as well as their spatial distribution and variability concerning the number of days with precipitation of a certain intensity in the period of 1981–2014. The study was based upon daily sums of atmospheric precipitation in years 1981–2014 derived from 5 synoptic stations, 9 climatological stations and 78 precipitation stations located in the Wielkopolskie Voivodeship (Fig. 1). The data was obtained from IMGW-PIB. The Wielkopolskie Voivodeship is an area with relatively low precipitation sums comparing to other regions of Poland. In the years 1981–2014, the average annual rainfall amounted to 548 mm and was characterized by high variability of rainfall amounts from year to year (Fig. 2, 3). The amplitude of fluctuations exceeded 500 mm. In the examined period, the average annual rainfall (from 92 stations) presents an upward trend (23 mm/10 years), the highest in the summer. The number of days with precipitation is increasing at a slower rate (Fig. 4). The distribution of rainfall in analyzed area is characterized by considerable spatial diversity (Fig. 5, 6, 7). The highest average sum of precipitation and the highest number of precipitation days were registered in the north-west, northern and southern parts of the region. On the contrary, the driest was the Wrzesińska Plain and the eastern part of the Wielkopolskie Voivodeship. Majority of the region is characterized by an average of 120–160 days with precipitation per year. The lowest number of such days are noted in the north-eastern part, and the highest – in the north-western part of the voivodeship (Fig. 8). In the seasonal distribution of rainfall, a clear prevalence of summer precipitation is visible, comprising 36.6% of the annual sum, with a maximum in July of 76.5 mm on average. The most intense precipitation, i.e. above 20 mm day, was least frequent in the central part of the study area (Fig. 9). The most diverse distribution is characterized by the weakest precipitation, i.e. less than 1 mm per day. Considerable variation in spatial distribution of precipitation indicates that rainfall is often of local nature. The amount and duration of precipitation as well as range depends on the cloud structure formed under specific synoptic conditions and local relief. The concentration of stations considered in a given area provides a more detailed image concerning the actual spatial variation of precipitation. Today, it is emphasised that urban land in agricultural use performs not only productive and economic functions, but also many more functions of great importance to a city, including ecological, health- and landscape-related, recreational, and social ones. In Poland, after the period of economic and political transformation, one can observe a dynamic expansion of urban areas and their strong pressure on farmland most valuable in productive and landscape terms. In conceptions and documents on spatial development of urbanised areas, agricultural functions tend to be marginalised or perceived as specific to rural areas. A special form of urban horticulture is gardening, including allotment gardens, which have a rich tradition and a history more than a hundred years long. The reasons for the appearance and development of allotment gardens should be sought in socio-economic changes associated with the industrialisation period. What is alarming today, is the opinion that those plots of land supposedly restrict the spatial development of urbanised areas. In addition to their numerous socio-economic functions, allotments are an important element in the implementation of the idea of sustainable development, and as such they should play a special role in the spatial policy of urban areas. The main goal of this paper is to present the development of family allotment gardens in Poland and their current number, structure and location in the Poznań agglomeration. An attempt was made to formulate recommendations for a spatial policy of the agglomeration and towards this goal data obtained from Polish Association of Allotment Holders and Central Statistical Office was analysed. In addition, field studies and survey research were conducted.
