Specific objectives include the following: (a) to determine fragmentation of forest areas in the gminas which are traversed by selected transports routes and to define the role of these routes for an increasing landscape fragmentation; (b) to determine the number of traffic incidents involving animals by road categories, seasons, time of the day or night and distance from forest. For the detailed analyses six research areas were selected through which the selected road sections run: (a) A1 on section Pruszcz Gdański–Grudziądz (operational since 2008) and DK91; (b) A4 on section Wrocław–Opole (operational since 2003) and DK94; (c) DK8 on section Kudowa Zdrój–Wrocław; (d) DK8 on section Augustów–Budzisko; (e) DK17 on section Garwolin–Kurów; (f) S8 on section Radzymin–Wyszków. Data on traffic incidents which involved animals cover the years 2006–2012 and originate from the SEWIK database. The results obtained show that: (1) between 2006 and 2012 the number and percentage of incidents involving animals were increasing on a regular basis; (2) new roads (motorways and expressways) do not significantly enhance the value of formal landscape fragmentation indicators, but constitute tremendous physical barriers. It is proven, inter alia, by a visibly lower number and density (per 1 km of road) of incidents on these routes, compared to other roads; (3) there is no simple relation between landscape fragmentation and the number and location of forest patches on the one hand, and the total number of incidents and their distribution in space on the other; incidents involving animals take place mainly late in the evening and at night; (4) events occur more frequently 100 m away from the forest than at a distance of 100–200 m away, which may prove some preferences as to road crossing place selection by the animals; (5) incidents within built-up areas, especially during the daytime, have different seasonal pattern, in particular there are no pronounced minimum and maximum periods, which may prove that these incidents involve animals other than ungulates. The shortest path is defined as the path with the minimal sum of resistances for patches and borders to be crossed. Three categories of resistances are incorporated to modify the minimum spanning tree: (a) Patch class resistance (based on the patch suitability for a given species and/or process); (b) Resistance of a patch-to-patch transfer (based on structural/ecological similarity of adjacent patches); (c) Resistance of the patch size and shape (based on a preferred patch size/shape metrics, e.g. the radius of gyration). When all the resistances are not determined (and equal one by convention) then the shortest path is defined as the path with the minimal number of borders to be crossed. On the basis of the identified paths some new landscape metrics are proposed for the Patch and Class levels, e.g.: [Mean] Number of Steps, [Transfer/Patch_Type/Patch_Size] Weighted Number of Steps, Path Elongation (=Weighted Number of Steps / Number of Steps), Path Sum of Resistance, Mean Path Sum of Resistance. Depending on the way of patches choice and resistance defining, the results are useful for identifying, describing and illustrating: (a) Patch and Patch class isolation; (b) Paths in the landscape; (c) Critical patches (nodes for many paths or with the highest resistance). The ecological sense and practical usefulness of the results depend of the kind and accuracy of the input map L1 - http://www.rcin.org.pl/igipz/Content/57999/PDF/WA51_78241_r2014-t38_PEK-Solon.pdf M3 - Text J2 - Problemy Ekologii Krajobrazu = The Problems of Landscape Ecology, t. 38 PY - 2014 EP - 32 KW - GIS KW - graph analysis KW - landscape metrics KW - resistance of environment KW - model A1 - Solon, Jerzy A1 - Pomianowski, Wojciech PB - Polska Asocjacja Ekologii Krajobrazu PB - Polska Akademia Nauk. The research was carried out at twelve research sites located in two regional units, i.e. (a) the northern part of mesoregion 842.72 West Lake District in the macroregion of the Lithuanian Lake District and (b) in the southern part of mesoregion 313.44 Damnicka Upland, within the macroregion of the Koszalin Coastland. By administrative division, these positions are respectively: in the gmina of Dubeninki, voivodeship of Warmian-Masury (Rogajny and Łoje), and in the gmina of Przerośl in Podlasie voivodeship (Rakówek) – hereinafter referred to collectively as the “Dubeninki area”; as well as in the gmina of Potęgowo in the Pomeranian Voivodship (villages of Wieliszewo, Malczkowo, Darżyno and Darżynko – hereinafter referred to as the “Potęgowo area”). Four of the research sites were located in fields of large area, and four in complexes of small fields subject to traditional cultivation. The faunistic data comes from 12 transects (6 for each regional unit and 3 for each field type – large-area fields and complexes of small fields) using standard trapping methods (Barber˙s traps). A set of landscape-structure indicators adapted to the local scale of the study was then applied. Results point to a relationship between the structure of the landscape, the expressed number of patches of plant communities, the diversity of vegetation in the surroundings and the presence of trees in the landscape, and species richness and diversity of ground beetles. Where agricultural areas nevertheless have a diversified landscape these are characterised by greater species richness of Carabidae than homogeneous areas. Furthermore, the shorter the distance to the nearest tree, the greater the species richness and diversity of Carabidae. However, soil type, as well as soil diversity, at a study site and its vicinity are not found to exert a direct impact on the species richness of Carabidae. Different soil types may be characterised by similar grain size, and thus similar humidity conditions and soil reaction, with these in turn determining other habitat conditions of importance to the studied taxon. The study area was located near Rogajny in the Suwałki Lake District, where 54 permanent study plots were established in a homogeneous field (Dd) and in a mosaic of small fields and balks (Dm). The earthworms were collected in spring and autumn over a two-year period (2007–2008), from blocks of soil measuring 25×25×30 cm. Soil samples were collected from the same sampling points as the earthworms. Both, qualitative and quantitative parameters of earthworm assemblages showed the same trends, thus appearing to be equally reflective. The complex arable landscape site supported higher earthworm diversity, abundance and biomass than the homogeneous arable landscape. The spring and autumn earthworm sampling campaigns revealed very different patterns. We conclude that species richness is determined mostly by spatial structure of agrocenosis mosaics, whilst abundance and biomass of earthworm community is mainly influenced by soil conditions. Comparisons between data and formulating conclusions should be made with great care, as these relations depend on the temporal scales to a large extent. The existing guidelines for the construction of this type of map include only a few basic types of ecosystems that work only at a national or international scale and are insufficient to identify the full potential of ecosystem services at local or regional scales. The aim of the study was to develop a comprehensive map of ecosystem types for mapping ecosystem services at a local and regional scale in three selected communes located within young glacial landscape (NE Poland). As a result, a detailed map of ecosystems has been constructed containing 42 ecosystem types including age and habitat categories. This original map is the first detailed cartographic work that can be successfully used to determine the potential for ecosystem services to be provided by areas analysed in large scales. The proposed approach has a universal character and can be also applied to any area analysed at similar spatial scales. These changes are seen as a threat to the cohesion and identity of existing landscapes. However, ongoing processes are often difficult to interpret and evaluate without a long-term historical perspective. Here, we focused on understanding the long-term landscape dynamics in the depopulated and economically marginalized Wiar River basin, where 87% of inhabitants were displaced after World War II. A detailed, spatially explicit land-cover analysis based on eight series of topographic data (dating from 1780 to 2017), in line with the review of archival sources and literature, allowed us for identification of patterns and drivers of change. We linked the driving forces and the resulting landscape properties to four distinct historical periods (i.e. pre-industrial, industrial, socialist, and free-market). We demonstrated how the landscape of 25 villages, dominated for centuries by open farmland, shifted after WWII into extensively forested, and that not all regions in Europe follow the pattern of increasing rate of land-cover change. The authors discuss here basic definitions, and selected examples of research in the field of landscape geography carried out in Poland. They show that the achievements of Polish geographers and landscape ecologists in identifying, analysing and assessing landscapes represents the common scientific tradition of the central part of Europe, considered one of the most comprehensively pursued anywhere in the world. This achievement should therefore constitute the basis for work on a comprehensive methodology by which to identify, delimit and assign value to landscape units, for the purposes of implementation of the European Landscape Convention in Poland. The latter suggestion at this stage reflects the fact that relevant work first arose as long ago as in the 19th century, out of studies in nature and general geography based on field observations and comparative studies, there has never been substantial implementation into practice, nor any wider popularisation in Poland. It further reflects the fact that, notwithstanding the number of years that have passed since the last more wide-ranging regionalisation and typological studies, the theoretical and main methodological basis underpinning the work has retained its value. Clearly ongoing changes in research tools and methodologies necessitate fresh thought and new solutions, but this should not happen through any abandonment of existing bases. There are specialists in the wider field of landscape who trained for decades at Polish academic centers. Their curriculum includes mapping of the landscape, at a detailed and review level, with a view to potential being evaluated, current means of use documented, recommendations made as regards future use, and so on.The new formal and legal situation relating to the requirement that the European Landscape Convention be implemented denotes far-greater involvement of well-trained specialists, both theoreticians and practitioners (dealing with all aspects of the landscape), when it comes to conceptual work on the development of a comprehensive methodology whereby landscape units may be identified, delimited and assigned value. Infuture, they will be bound, not only to participate in, but also to manage, detailed work at the regional level, within landscape audits as recognised by law. The ”current” situation relevant to the work is considered to relate to a period lasting no longer than the last 10 years. The authors undertook the work in the light of numerous academic discussions accompanying the preparation of a Poland-wide project on ”The identification and evaluation of landscapes – methodology and main assumptions”. The work thus represented a methodological prelude to the anticipated draft version of the Act amending certain Acts in connection with the Strengthening of the Landscape Protection Instrument, which was adopted on April 24th 2015 (the Dziennik Ustaw Official Journal of Laws of 2015, item 774). Arising out of this is an obligation that landscape audits be drawn up at the level of the voivodship(province-region). The article first reviews approaches taken hitherto where the classification of landscapes is concerned. It also seeks to bring some order to the terminological chaos holding away in the literature, and to present a better-developed typology of contemporary landscapes against that background. The proposed classification is based around two main groups of criteria. The first group relates to a scale of anthropogenic transformation of the landscape. It entails structural and process-related (functional) criteria which serve to order landscapes along a gradient of the progressive replacement of natural forms and processes shaping the landscape by anthropogenic forms and processes. The application of this approach led to the identification of landscape groups A,B and C, where: Group A comprises natural landscapes of which cultural use is made, though functioning mainly as a reflection of natural process, only to some (varying) extent modified by human activity; Group B comprises natural/cultural landscapes shaped through the joint action of natural processes and conscious modification of land cover and spatial structure by human beings; Group C comprises cultural landscapes in which the structure and functions are fully shaped by human activity. The second typological level entailed criteria relating to the dominance of defined forms of cover, as well as the structure and intensity of land management. A basis for the identification or types and sub-types of contemporary landscape was provided in this way, with the attendant reconnaissance of the current diversity of landscapes in Poland allowing for the identification of the aforesaid 3 groups, as well as 15 types and 49 subtypes of currently-existing landscape. Using numerous quantitative criteria, including through the defining and application of the criterion of the landscape matrix (in relation to landscapes shaped anthropogenically, in the case of groups B and C), the presented typology of current landscapes is far more formalised and objectivised than its predecessors. Due to the large diversity of plant species on wetlands and their small-individual volumes, generating surfaces (applicable to crops) or 3D shapes (applicable to trees) does not seem to be an appropriate solution in this case. It was recognized that for the implementation of the objective pursued, the best characteristics of the LiDAR-derived point cloud is the density of the points in a given volume. Validation measurements were taken for volumes, whose projection on the ground is a square 1×1 m. An algorithm of weighting the number of points was proposed that takes into account the distance from the ground-based scanner and other scanning parameters. The results were referred to the actual weight of the dry biomass, acquired by the classical invasive method (cutting, drying, weighing). Under certain assumptions, the results of this study proved to be very promising – the coefficient of determination R2 for the linear function reached a maximum value of 0,97. However, more field data is needed for the implementation of the proposed method to the continuous monitoring system of the above-ground biomass of non-forest vegetation. The commonly accepted regionalisation of Poland developed by J. Kondracki (Kondracki & Richling 1994) is sufficient for work at an overview scale (e.g. 1:500,000), whereas its spatial accuracy is too low to make use of it for the purpose of Polish landscape cataloguing. The aim of this article is to present a more up-to-date and detailed division of Poland into mesoregions, adjusted to the 1:50,000 scale. In comparison with older work, the number of mesoregions has increased from 316 to 344. In many cases, some far-reaching changes in meso- and macroregions were made. Nevertheless, in most cases the previous system of units was maintained, with more detailed adjustment of boundaries based on the latest geological and geomorphological data and the use of GIS tools for the DEM analysis. The division presented here is a creatively developing new work aligning the proposals of the majority of Polish researchers. At the same time, it is a regionalisation maintaining the idea of the work developed by J. Kondracki as well as his theoretical assumptions and the criteria used to distinguish units, which makes it a logical continuation of his regional division.
