Social inequality is widely considered to be one of the most important challenges of modern times. The high level of social inequality, particularly pronounced in urban areas, negatively impacts the quality of life of their inhabitants. This article describes the contemporary definitions of the concept of social inequality and introduces some synonymous terms. The impact of social inequality on the daily lives of urban residents is explained. The history of research on inequality and the most commonly used research approaches are also discussed.
