Abstract:

The entry of 10 new members to the European Union on the 1st of May 2004 has moved Saxony from the periphery back to the centre of Europe. Hence the Saxon foundation “Pro Archaeologia Saxoniae” has decided to make its proceeds available not only for research projects in Saxony but also in neighbouring regions of Poland and Czech Republic. This decision is based on the knowledge that historically oriented scholarship can make a crucial contribution to European integration. It is the wish of the foundation that sponsoring archaeology will serve to intensify cross boarder dialogue, lead to an increase in knowledge about the region’s common past, distinguish scholarly and scientific excellence and support innovative ideas and research approaches. The biography and life work of Werner Coblenz and Gerhard Bersu, whose names are born by the foundation Pro Archaeologia Saxoniae´s award and scholarship, stand for European dialogue and scholarly and scientific freedom. Both Werner Coblenz and Gerhard Bersu stood up for these ideals during both periods of German dictatorship
