Description:

Photography (scan from a slide). Memorial stones (paliya) are set to commemorate a particular person who died suddenly. They are usually placed at the border of the village . They are made of stone, on which are engraved symbols identifying the person and the signature in the local language (Gujarati here). There are some symbols (rider on a horse or a camel, a shrine, a female figure, hands raised up). Hand raised up points to the tragic death of a woman. At the top, round shapes represent the sun and the moon. The image shows two stones with images of riders on camels, both hold in their hands a sword and shield - the signs pointing to a Rajput. The custom of placing stones post-mortem is known all over the Indian subcontinent
