Abstract:

The eponymous site of the Świderska (Swiderian) Culture, Świdry Wielkie I, was first investigated by Stefan Krukowski and Ludwik Sawicki in the early 20th century. An abundant flint assemblage recovered at the time laid the ground for distinguishing a “Swiderian industry”, which led in turn to the identification of a separate Swiderian Culture and the “Masovian cycle”. The finds from Sawicki’s excavations are currently stored at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. In this article the authors undertake a comparative analysis of the information published by the original researchers and the results of their own examination of this archival collection, reassessing it in the context of regional flint-knapping which had provided the grounds for identifying the eponymous “industry”.
