Abstract:

Hans Lutsch’s inventory of monuments of Silesia, compiled at the turn of the 20th century, remains the most comprehensive compilation of bells in the area, though more than hundred years have passed since its publication. This work, however, in spite of its merits, remains far outdated — both in view of the tremendous war losses in the first half of the 20th century and its methodological foundations. Therefore, there is a need to carry out an inventory of these artefacts, basing on modern and interdisciplinary methods used in campanological research. The aim of the article is to address the problems arising from the study of bells in the Lutsch catalogue, and to refer to contemporary conservation documentation. The article’s thesis draws attention to the poor state of research on the oldest bells in Lower Silesia.
