Object description:

Photo (scan from slide). The photo shows three groups of pilgrims standing around the brahmanas (panda). The brahmanas (panda) record the personal data of pilgrims visiting Allahabad (the Hindu name of the city of Prayag) during the festival of Kumbh mela. This place is considered by the followers of Hinduism to be exceptional for the people. The brahmanas offer various services - they write down the names of the pilgrims, check the names of family members who have visited Allahabad in the past. In addition, he accepts an offering for the deceased family ancestors. The cow calf is considered by some Hindu believers as a good guide to the world of the dead. In the background you can see other pilgrims. This is done during the kumbh mela festival, which takes place in Allahabad every 12 years (after 6 years, the so-called half-mela is held). It is the most numerous festival in Northern India, and the uniqueness of Allahabad is that it lies where the Jamuna flows into the Ganges. The place where the waters merge, and this place is precisely visible in the different colors of the two waters - is considered to be particularly suitable for a bath during kumbh mela.
