Object description:

The photo shows a fragment of the shepherds' wedding ceremony. It is a group of wedding guests, in traditional costumes of rabari shepherds. Young children are in the foreground with men around them. Guests are dressed in festive costumes, women in characteristic long black shawls with red dots. Young women are decorated with silver jewelry to indicate their married status (and in the case of girls, a sign of engagement), and men in white. For the duration of the ceremony, the young couple are tied together with a 'holy' rope. In the case of rabari shepherds, the altar is a fire lit by the priest, which the young couple then surrounds.
