She also carried out studies on early medieval handcraft, mainly amber and glass-making. The discovery – a result of excavations conducted as part of Polish-Italian cooperation – of glassworks from the 7th – 8th centuries on Torcello Island triggered her studies on Venetian glass making, which resulted in her many works dedicated to this issue. The sites comprised two artifact concentrations buried in trenches XVI and XVIIc. A number of quantitative and qualitative attributes characterize the two assemblages, namely: the dominance of scrapers over endscrapers, the occurrence of bipolar technique of flaking, the microlithic character of tools and the governance of trapezoidal pieces among the insets. These are the traits that have suggested a new discrete stylistic entity, which, subsequently, has been termed the Kokry industry. One hundred thirty and six flint artifacts from trench XVIIc show use-wear traces indicating heavy use. Hide processing wear has been the most frequent. In addition, the tools were involved in wood and bone processing, whereas the microliths were used as insets being elements of armament. The Author presents the significance and perspectives of sourceoriented research on medieval glassware from the middle Volga region. The specific character of the region, its key importance in many ethno-cultural, political and historical processes, together with its massive source base of glass artifacts (which includes adornments, glass tableware, window glass) opens a broad perspective for historical reconstructions. Not only can the direction and dynamics of international relations be defined, but it is also possible to establish levels of craft and urban culture development, as well as more specific site chronologies, all of which help in stratifying the towns of Volga Bulgaria by their social status within the state. The feature was found in layer VIII dated to the period between the 4th quarter of the 10th c. to the 1st half of the 11th c. The bead has the shape of a central part of a sphere; its body was made of reddish-brown opaque glass, while the ornament – of yellow opaque glass. The ornament presents a complicated pattern, which reminds of Arabic writing. The paleographic analysis did not confirm this assumption and suggested only a small similarity to the writing. The X-ray analysis of glass allowed to discover that the bead was made of lead-silica glass. Further examinations showed that beads made of this kind of glass seldom show in the Arabic world and the closest analogies to the bespoken feature originate from Wolin, York and Berlin-Spandau. Barter in the fur trade caused huge quantities of glass beads to be concentrated in settlements of the region. Different bead types were present in three chronological periods: 10th–beginning of 11th c., 11th, 12th–13th centuries. Comparison of certain bead types traces the routes by which glass beads came to the north of Rus’. Another method calls for comparing bead necklaces from burials. Cemeteries of the 11th c. in Belozer’e have helped to clarify some of the issues. A characteristic of trade routes in the 12th–13th centuries is limited due to a decline in the number of beads from archaeological sites. Known under the name of Krzemionki Opatowskie it is among the best preserved prehistoric flint mines in Europe, along with Grimes Graves, Cissbury and Harrow Hill in England, Rijckholt – St. Geertruid in the Dutch Limburg, Defensola in Italy and Borownia in Poland; it is considered the greatest monument of prehistoric culture in Central Europe. 2012 marked the ninetieth anniversary of its discovery. The anniversary coincided with a series of publications devoted to the mine.
