TY - GEN N1 - ill. ; 29 cm N2 - The study catalogues all currently known finds of bone and antler harpoons and points associated with Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Protoneolithic culture in the southern Baltic zone, between the mouths of the Oder and Niemen rivers. It undertakes an analysis of the category in typological, chronological and cultural terms, taking into consideration results of recent paleogeographic investigations and research on the Stone Age in this region. An important element of this study are drawn plates of nearly all of the discussed objects as well as distribution maps. The author gives a critical analysis of the classic harpoon and point typology presented by J.G.D. Clark (1936) in the context of a broader source base, encompassing finds from the entire Baltic zone. A detailed morphological classification of harpoon barbs is one of the most important tools essential to this end L1 - http://www.rcin.org.pl/iae/Content/50506/PDF/WA308_68761_PIII353_Typological-chronolo_I.pdf M3 - Text J2 - Przegląd Archeologiczny T. 61 (2013) PY - 2013 EP - 144 KW - Paleolithic KW - Mesolithic KW - Protoneolithic KW - harpoons KW - points KW - barbs KW - tang KW - base KW - bone KW - antler KW - assemblages A1 - Galiński, Tadeusz A2 - Zych, Iwona. The discovery of mining shafts and underground galleries dating to the Neolithic period was a world sensation in 1867 and it initiated archaeological research into ancient mining in Belgium, Great Britain and other countries. Once the Neolithic remains of striped flint exploitation were discovered in 1922 in Krzemionki Opatowskie, the Spiennes shafts and flint workshops became an important point of reference for the mine in Polish territory. The prehistoric mine in Belgium was listed on the World Heritage List in 2000, confirming its exceptional importance. Now the Krzemionki Prehistoric Striped Flint Mining Region is in the running for the same recognition. In this context the article presents the history of archaeological research in Spiennes through the beginning of the 21st century L1 - http://www.rcin.org.pl/iae/Content/85631/PDF/WA308_91639_P320_Neolityczna-kopalnia_I.pdf M3 - Text J2 - The Neolithic flint mine in Spiennes (Belgium). It is an excellent example of the importance of the archaeological context, without which any interpretation is doomed to be based on more or less probable hypotheses. The author does not believe it possible today to attribute these „bracteates” to Vsevolod II Olgovič or to Mstislav Vladimirovič, at least for now; he is also critical of any consideration in this context of the seal attributed to Michael Oleg Svyatoslavič, as this artifact may very well be a modern fake. He shares the doubts of some researchers regarding the authenticity of newer finds of single „bracteates”. He favors distinguishing three separate „bracteate” types: the first, bearing the so-called sign of the Rurikids, should be viewed as being of 11th c. date (it resembles the sign on coins of Svyatopolk I), whereas the other two, both with representations of the archangel Michael, would be of 12th and 13th c. date respectively. The source base today is insufficient in the author’s opinion to determine who issued these so-called Taman bracteates and when. It is a matter of discussion the shape and nature of the new or modified theories adapted to new fields of research L1 - http://www.rcin.org.pl/iae/Content/61942/PDF/WA308_81614_P320_Czy-wspolczesna-i-pr_I.pdf M3 - Text J2 - Archeologia Polski T. 60 (2015) Z. 1-2 PY - 2015 IS - 1-2 EP - 37 KW - theory in archaeology KW - archaeology today KW - archaeology in the future KW - need of theory KW - future of archaeological theory A1 - Minta-Tworzowska, Danuta A2 - Zych, Iwona. Her research is concentrated on important issues like settlement, economic basics, flint and mine¬ral raw material supplies, interrelations between hunters and gatherers, the art and mortuary practices of these societies, the natural environment. She has published her results in more than 100 scholarly publications and papers read at many Polish and international conferences devoted to these issues. She has also found time to teach and to popularize her work. Her outstanding achievements have won her the respect of the scholarly world and her personal charm has given her the sympathy of her colleagues, archaeologists in Poland and abroad L1 - http://www.rcin.org.pl/iae/Content/54905/PDF/WA308_75092_P320_Dr-hab-Zofia-Sulgost_I.pdf M3 - Text J2 - Archeologia Polski T. 59 Z. 1-2 (2014) PY - 2014 IS - 1-2 EP - 12 KW - Poland KW - Zofia Sulgostowska KW - Paleolithic KW - Mesolithic KW - scholarly achievement A1 - Kobusiewicz, Michał A2 - Zych, Iwona. Lying under a peat layer in a zone on the shore of the old lake are the remains of two well preserved pole shelters with fireplaces in the middle. Both have been dated to the terminal Preboreal period, that is, 9300–9100 BP. Artifacts from the shelters included objects made of stone, flint and organic materials. The assemblage encompassed diverse tools and an exceptionally abundant group of objects representing the spiritual sphere. The artifacts were discovered in a precisely defined cultural, chronological and functional context, set in a well identified natural environment. Hence their seldom matched research significance, giving grounds for a far-reaching reconstruction of the everyday life of Mesolithic hunters L1 - http://www.rcin.org.pl/iae/Content/54911/PDF/WA308_75138_P320_Obozowiska-lowieckie_I.pdf M3 - Text J2 - Archeologia Polski T. 59 Z. 1-2 (2014) PY - 2014 IS - 1-2 EP - 120 KW - Preboreal KW - Mesolithic KW - Bolków KW - Poland KW - campsites KW - totem figures KW - flint tools KW - hunting bow KW - yew point A1 - Galiński, Tadeusz A2 - Zych, Iwona. The space between the two sets of trails is filled with two rows of letters in the Greek alphabet, which were painted with a color that is now white. The body of the vessel and the ornament were both made of glass of the Na2O CaO Al2O3 ·SiO2 chemical type. The body (matrix) glass was colored with oxides of iron (Fe2O3) and titanium (TiO2), that of the ornament with oxides of iron (Fe2O3), manganese (MnO) and copper (CuO). The results of a comparative analysis of sum totals and ratios of main glass-forming components and the quantitative content of different components in the glass of vessel from Odărci, compared to objects from other regions, appear to indicate that the glass of beaker was melted in a center somewhere in southern Europe or in Mediterranean center (in the late Roman or early Byzantine period) L1 - http://www.rcin.org.pl/iae/Content/54915/PDF/WA308_75175_P320_Fragment-naczynia-sz_I.pdf M3 - Text J2 - Archeologia Polski T. 59 Z. 1-2 (2014) PY - 2014 IS - 1-2 EP - 269 KW - Bulgaria KW - Odărci KW - late Roman/early Byzantine period KW - glass vessel with Greek in-scription A1 - Dekówna, Maria A1 - Dymaczewska, Urszula A2 - Zych, Iwona.
