They refer to an everyday life, and are connected with a house-keeping and investment works (building) undertaken within a homestead. Such activities were – and still are to some extend – implemented in cooperation with neighbours, family, becoming a way of life not only economic, but also socialising, social, and sometimes festive. In considering them, including the social exchange theory, the author shows the relationships and dependencies that exist between residents of the community. The forms of mutual assistance and cooperation, selected for this text, are a small fragment of a social life, however, the rules that govern them, especially in the past, had an impact on the whole of social life. It is based on archive materials, relevant literature and field research conducted by the author in 1991–1994. The work describes the notional world of highlanders from the turn of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. This conceptual framework was shaped by many different factors (such as the location of the region, its economy, peripheral occupations, multicultural ethnic structure) and the determinants of Christian and magical syncretism, as well as the naturalist and religious system. The parallel notional reality that emerged reflected the adequate semiotic space of the past, still remains a part of the spiritual cultural legacy and a characteristic feature of the region of Podhale L1 - http://www.rcin.org.pl/iae/Content/54935/PDF/WA308_75323_P368_Cultural-Aspects-of_I.pdf M3 - Text J2 - Ethnologia Polona 35 (2014) PY - 2014 EP - 210 KW - religious system KW - beliefs KW - supernatural creatures KW - human beings KW - magic KW - Podhale A1 - Lehr, Urszula PB - Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology Polish Academy of Sciences VL - 35 CY - Warszawa SP - 181 T1 - Cultural Aspects of the Spiritual Legacy of Podhale Highlanders UR - http://www.rcin.org.pl/iae/dlibra/publication/edition/54935 ER - TY - GEN N1 - ill. ; 24 cm N2 - The author describes the traditional music of Podhale, focusing primarily on its twentieth-century history. This type of art was revitalized in the 1950s by a group of scholars enamoured with highlander culture and later supported by institutions dealing with protecting and promoting so-called ‘modern folk art’ in post-war Poland. Today glass painting belongs to the artistic landmarks of Podhale, making it the largest centre of vitrochromy in Europe. Its continuing presence in the region is regarded by the public as an evidence of the vitality of highlander tradition in Podhale. Folklore scenes painted on glass, especially the highly popular images of brigands, are purchased by tourists and act as symbols of the fascinating and exotic highlander culture. Regional activists perceive glass painting as a permanent and valuable element of their native heritage, which ought to be protected and included into the curriculum of regional education. The mimetic character of this genre provides the medium for presenting an imaginary picture of the highlander, giving artists and recipients a tool for creating a kind of a stereotypical self-portrait. The associations glass painting evokes (old, permanent, unchanging) clearly point to its mythical significance and incorporate it into the broader trend of invented traditions – a phenomenon which has recently entered a stage of dynamic development in Podhale L1 - http://www.rcin.org.pl/iae/Content/54933/PDF/WA308_75318_P368_Glass-Painting-in-Co_I.pdf M3 - Text J2 - Ethnologia Polona 35 (2014) PY - 2014 EP - 162 KW - folk art KW - art KW - regionalism KW - invented tradition KW - Podhale A1 - Golonka-Czajkowska, Monika PB - Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology Polish Academy of Sciences VL - 35 CY - Warszawa SP - 145 T1 - Glass Painting in Contemporary Podhale UR - http://www.rcin.org.pl/iae/dlibra/publication/edition/54933 ER - TY - GEN N1 - ill. ; 24 cm N2 - Traditional and contemporary rituals presented in the article, are examples of a specific type of functioning of families and rural communities in the context of the customs and rituals referring to the rites of previous generations. This site is also included in the recently published catalogue of European flint mines (Chmielewska 1980, 583 ff.). The excavations uncovered one pit as a whole and a few others partly. From analysis of flint artifacts from on-site workshops and the 1 4C date of a sample of charcoal from one of the pits, we can assume that the population of the younger stage of the Mierzanowice culture (1600-1500 BC) extracted chocolate flint at this part of the mine.
