The focus is on classical/traditional carnivals and contemporary/institutionalised ones. Classical carnivals are characterized by hierarchy, rivalry, and by creating feelings of community. They belong to the type of activities connected with the manifestation of tradition, identity and belongingness. Contemporary/institutionalized spectacles, on the other hand, with their businesslike and commercial character, are connected with the city space or a tourist centre. Their popularity and commonness can be explained with the fact that they cross local and national borders (as in the case of the Berber carnival), or continents, as in the case of the contemporary carnival in Rio, typical of Latin America}, type={Text}, title={Oblicza karnawału w krajach Maghrebu.
