 abstract={The authoress is interested in carolling forms related to Epiphany (6 January): the traditional carolling group – the Three Kings, and the newer ones – missionary carollers, as well as the Cortege of the Three Kings, which is an original street procession organised in many cities in Poland since 2009. This noisy street event changes the way in which people participate in the religious ‘mystery play’: features of theatre are clearly visible in the religious ceremony (there are leading and supporting actors who are dressed up, royal paper crowns become common props, stages are erected for amateur and professional artistic groups). Priests, believers, teachers, students, preschoolers, scouts, politicians, city presidents, devils, angels and medieval knights march in the city streets. It can be seen not only as sacrum (‘a street nativity play’), but also as fun (‘we were all having fun’). This street spectacle is an example of trivialised religion and a proof of very lively folk piety. Furthermore, it can also be perceived as a peculiar way of promoting the city. The author postulates the need to observe and analyse this type of new cultural offers centred around the Church in Poland.
