This ambivalence makes it possible to create alternative models that protect the society against extreme forms of behaviour and consequently against conflicts and rifts. Ambivalence is a feature of every culture; yet various cultures approach this phenomenon differently, sometimes suppressing or glorifying it. It is also, in the author’s opinion, an immanent element of Polish culture; an element that manifests itself particularly strongly in that variety of culture which is connected with politics. Any politi¬cal authority, regardless of the level of its legitimacy, evokes extreme emotions: from respect, adoration and worship through disdain and contempt to hate and fear. This applies also to figures identified with politics, connected not only with the factual exercising of power, but also with the fight for winning and holding it. The ambivalent quality of Polish culture is evident in examples linked with the popular perception of national heroes involved in the fight for independence, among whom Józef Piłsudskiholds a special place. His continuing presence in the Polish political life, numerous references to him and the currently invoked parallelism of certain situations all attest to his importance; yet at the same time Piłsudski has remained a controversial figure until the present day. Approaching his legend, which links elements of cult and rejection, from the perspective of cultural ambivalence makes it possible to ascertain the manner in which that legend operates}, type={Text}, title={Cultural Ambivalence in the Anthropological Study of Politics.
