In the years 1961-1962 a team of archaeologists from the Institute of Material Culture History at the Polish Academy of Sciences carried out excavation works on Torcello Island, well known in the 10th century market place of the lagoon. The cooperation was renewed in 1980. Following the surface and geophysical inspection in 1981, excavation works were carried out in 1983-1986 at Murano Island and in 1983 at Torcello. Since the 1994 a research project concerning the physical environment of archaeological sites Murano and Torcello was realized. The excavations on Torcello indicated that the permanent settlement developed there already in the first centuries AD. Climatic changes occurring in the migration period coexisting with natural disasters severally encumbered life. The examined area since the 7th cent. was continuously used, a glass workshop was finally built. Torcello settlement got the patterns of craft and trading center. The island since the end of 10th cent. became a prominent place of religious life, abandoned in modern times. Archaeological discoveries have supplied valuable information about the confrontation of lagoon people with the instable natural environment too}, type={Text}, title={Początki Wenecji w świetle polsko-włoskich badań archeologicznych}, keywords={Venice, Middle Ages, archaeology, lagoon, ecology}, }
