The development of metallurgical industry in the valley of the Mała Panew River was at the same time a process of progressing modernisation and urbanization of the region. The site of the steelworks – a national and ethnic borderland – was at the same time a place symbolically seized throughout centuries. However, a violent demise of the steelworks in the 1990s marked the beginning of painful changes for the inhabitants. The author attempts to discover the experiences of people working at the steelworks, to recreate the “living memories” of the steelworks’ history, of what it used to be and of what it is now for the people living there. She finds some surviving traces of reflections and stories relating to this place to reveal how the metallurgical tradition is revived and promoted nowadays. All this is possible thanks to the local enthusiasts that are the genius loci of this place"]
