Abstract:

Te study provides updated information on the distribution of the socially parasitic ant Polyergus rufescens (Latreille) in Poland, compiled from historical records, a recent feld observation and data from iNaturalist. Te species was recorded in the Kraków area, where it had last been noted over a century ago. Its occurrence in suburban habitats and a potential gradual range expansion in response to urban microclimatic conditions are discussed. Moreover, in a laboratory setting, an alate gyne of P. rufescens was observed feeding independently on honey and subsequently sharing it with workers of its host, Formica cinerea Mayr, which may point to previously undocumented behavioural plasticity. Overall, we highlight aspects of behaviour worthy of further study and emphasize the need for continued monitoring of this rare and biologically specialized species.
