Abstract:

For some time, the literature on the subject has emphasised the necessity for comprehensive and integrated research on the cult of saints, particularly in the context of their patronages. Historical invocations of churches serve as a key factor in understanding the past in terms of religious culture, the influence of various cultural factors, and the political conditions that are often reflected in specific cults. This, therefore, gave rise to the need to research the patronages of the Diocese of Płock, whose historical territory is diverse in both geographical and social terms. This diversity has influenced the nature of settlement, which in turn has significantly impacted the choice of church invocations. The first chapter discusses the research methods used to identify the original historical titles of churches, which have changed at various points in history. The following part is a catalogue that includes an almost comprehensive list of all identified sacred buildings, based on available source material. The subsequent two chapters provide interpretations of the messages contained in the examined patronage, focusing on aspects of chronology, geography, and specific social groups. A vital component of this book are the appendices, which feature tables, charts, and maps that facilitate further research on patronage. Thus, this study lays the groundwork for investigating patronage applicable in other contexts.
