The article aims to discuss the activities and atmosphere of two correctional institutions for young people active in the period when Poland was partitioned: in Studzieniec in the Kingdom of Poland and Wieluciany in the Vilnius Region. It presents how both institutions were established and explains the legal basis and principles that organized their activities. It describes the community of pupils and the conditions in which they functioned in the institutions. Historical and pedagogical research methods are applied. The study was conducted in Polish and Lithuanian archives and libraries, therefore it covers materials written in Lithuanian, Polish and Russian. As a result of the analysis of archival and press sources, the climate of the institutions, the conditions and effects of resocialization activities were determined. The study shows the weaknesses of modern resocialization practice and the character of Studzieniec and Wieluciany as total institutions using panoptic power.
