Abstract:

The article analyses the circumstances that led to Waldemar Pawlak becoming Prime Minister of the Democratic Left Alliance and Polish People’s Party (SLD-PSL) coalition government. It examines the most significant conflicts within the coalition and the role played by Prime Minister Pawlak in addressing them. His rivalry with the leader of the SLD, Aleksander Kwaśniewski, was also recreated. An analysis of Prime Minister Pawlak’s relationship with Lech Wałęsa enabled the explanation of the circumstances leading to the loss of support from the president, which ultimately determined the resignation of the head of government.
