Herbarium of the British Antarctic Survey (AAS) ; Okaz ten zebrany zostal w trakcie południowego lata 1987/1988 przez L. Greenfielda na wyspie Deception w archipelagu Szetlandów Południowych w Zachodniej Antarktyce i w 1993 roku M. E. Newton oznaczyla go tylko do rodzaju Ditrichum [Hampe]. W maju 1997 roku R. Ochyra i R. I. Lewis Smith uznali, że reprezentuje on nieznany, nowy dla nauki gatunek, ktory początkowo zamierzali opisać pod nazwą "Ditrichum austro-shetlandicum". Ostatecznie R. Ochyra zmienił nazwę gatunkową przekreślając epitet austro-shetlandicum i zastępując go ręcznie napisaną nazwą gemmiferum, pod ktorą zostal ,on opublikowany w 1998 roku.
