Description:

Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis

Abstract:

Autopsy examination of 60-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and van Gieson method. The spongy degeneration was found in some places transforming into areas of tissue completely devoid of cellular elements, in others there were cavities of diffuse necrosis. Small perivascular haemorrhages were found both in the vicinity of these lesions and in areas quite distant from them, sometimes of larger size pushing the tissue apart and penetrating the malacia-affected area. Numerous leukocytes were seen, concentrated perivascularly or loosely scattered in the tissue. A slight glial reaction was noted, and macrophages were absent. Numerous cellular vacuolations and cells with features of ischemic changes were observed in the cortex. Many vessels were filled with leukocytic aggregates. The meninges were thickened with small lymphocytic infiltrates with admixture of macrophages. Features of putrefaction were noted.Histological diagnosis: Foci encephalomalaciae recens cum haemorrhagiae multiplices cerebri. Thrombosis art.cer. mediae. Putrefactio
