Description:

Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis

Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Encephalitis lymphocytaria probabiliter parainfeotiosa seu concomitans otitidem.Autopsy examination of 14-month-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain frozen sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and cresyl violet method. The specimens showed significant diffuse glial proliferation and perivascular lymphocytic infiltrates. Diffuse lymphocytic infiltrates were seen in the meninges. The lesions involved the cerebral hemispheres and cerebellum, mainly the white matter. The brain stem remained rather unchanged. In the cerebral cortex, mediocre desolation and much loose endothelial cells were observed. Large desolations and glial proliferation occurred in the basal ganglia. In the cerebellum, severely damaged Purkinje cells (Bergmann glial proliferation) and nucleus dentatus cells were seen.
