Description:

Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis

Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Ependymoma ?Autopsy examination of 41-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and van Gieson method. In the frontal region around the tissue cavity, a tumor with an uncommon structure was found: there were mast astrocytes scattered loosely among the disintegrating tissue, round chromatin-rich cells with scanty or no protoplasm, large mast cell macrophages. The vessel walls were stimulated and proliferating. Single mitoses were encountered among round cells with dark chromatin. In contrast, there was an abundant vascular network in the brainstem tumor, giving it a characteristic architecture. The cells were dark, round, rich in chromatin . In some vessels they formed characteristic " with space" arrangements, in others they adhered closely to the vessel. In the tumor there were numerous necrotic areas surrounded by cellular shafts.
