Abstract:

DNA exists as a double helical structure, called B helix, which is the most commonstructure. In native RNA, double-stranded helical regions are short (on average 5–7 basepairs long) and RNA contains many different structural motifs, such as: hairpins, symmetrical and asymmetrical single or double nucleotide bulges, internal loops. Thepolymorphic nature of nucleic acids allows to adopt a variety of structures depending onthe sequences, the local environment, the presence of molecules or chemicalmodifications. For examples, DNA and RNA can form parallel-stranded duplexes, triplehelical structures (triplexes) or four-stranded structures (quadruplexes).
