In the paper a computer aided decision support system for simulation, optimisation and control of the sewage purification process in a wastewater treatment plant is presented. An innovation in the developed system is the use of mathematical models of the sewage purification process to realise an active control of the wastewater treatment . plant whereas the existing computer systems for wastewater plants work without any process models and they make only a passive controlof the separated plant objects, i.e. they perform the stabilisation of the process parameters on the given values level. Some results of the mathematical modelling and computer simulation and identification ofa wastewater plant under investigation are shown. The models developed describe the individual elements of the technological process occurred in the wastewater plant and also the process as a whole and they are formulated by the linear differentia[ equations as well as by the difference equations and the neural networks. For their identification the methods of the hand made calibration and the time series and neural network algorithms are used. The aim of the paper is to indicatef the wastewater purification process and to bring out a discussion about the problems arising by the computerisation of modern wastewater treatment plants.
