Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Encephalomacia recens hemisphaerii dextri in regione nucleorum basalium. Oedema et hyperaemia cerebri.Autopsy examination of 74-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and cresyl-violet.The head of the caudate nucleus and the adjacent white matter showed a fresh focus of malacia with the presence of single macrophages. The cortex cellular loss and changes of ischemic, chronic and fatty degeneration types. Edematous changes were predominant in all specimens. Virchow-Robin spaces were dilated. The vascular-tissue border was loosened. Strong glial activation and proliferation was observed. Transudative fluid and hemorrhages were seen in the vicinity of numerous vessels. Atherosclerotic lesions of mild intensity were found in the vessels. Macrophages and histiocytic cells were seen in the meninges.
