Abstract:

The article gives an analysis of a single public speech in respect of multimodal displays of negation. It emphasisesespecially the relations between signs and symptoms of negation and affirmation. The data — an audiovisualrecording — has been annotated using ELAN with a template, which besides a text transcriptionenables a description of i.a. hand gestures (with a few specific features), arm and head movements, gazeand mimics.Observation of the temporal coordination between the respective means of expression let to distinct somesubcategories of multimodal negative utterances: definitive negations, seemingly mismatched negations,amplifying negations, exclusively non-verbal negations, ironic negations and verbal negations accompaniedby gestures of non-negated predicates.
