Abstract:

In this paper, a computationally simple method for generating reduced-order models that minimise the L2 norm of the approximation error while retaining a number of second-order information indices ( energies of the resolvent kernel) is presented. The method exploits the energy retention property peculiar to the Routh reduction method as well as the interpolation property of L2- optimal approximations. The method can be adapted to the case in which the steady-state response to step inputs must also be preserved. Two examples taken from the relevant literature show that the suggested techniques may lead to approximations that are not worse than those afforded by alternative techniques.
