Abstract:

The presented article is a fragment of more extensive research on the 1905 Revolution in the Grodno Guberniya and concerns the history of the Bund party. The analysis focuses on local aspects of the Bund’s political practice: organizational structures, financing of the party, agitation and propaganda techniques, relations with other political parties, reprisals against Bundists, attempts to infl uence the non-Jewish proletariat, peasants and the army. There is a short presentation of trade union issues, participation in election campaigns to the Duma, as well as the creation of a new public sphere in the form of workers’ ‘exchanges’ and party ‘clubs.’ Besides, attention is paid to Bundist radicalism, related to the significant majority of young people in the party’s ranks and their revolutionary culture. Grassroots radicalism of local activists manifested itself both in the fight against the police and army (combat organizations), and against anti-Jewish attackers (self-defence), as well as in the use of economic terror in the form of intimidation and expropriation.
