Abstract:

The paper addresses the problem of health effects of air pollution, aiming at quantifying the health burden due to local air pollution in the urban area of Warsaw, Poland. The air pollutants, such as particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2), benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P), and heavy metals are analyzed. The annual mean concentrations are computed by the CALMET/CALPUFF modelling system based on the emission and meteorological data from the year 2012. The spatial distribution of the exposure (E) for these pollutants and the Intake Fraction index (iF) for the study population density is estimated, with the resolution of 500m x 500m, and the results obtained are discussed. Changes in mortality rate and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) are estimated and the conclusions are drawn, indicating the impact of local decisions on the potential improvement of air quality and reduction of associated negative health effects.
