Abstract:

Classsically, in the theory of aggregation we consider the broadly-conceived averaging functions and logical connectives. However, one often needs a very different kind of a proper synthesis of multidimensional numeric data into a single number. In this paper we propose an axiomatization and investigate most fundamental properties of the dispersion functions, which may be used to measure data variability, spread, or scatter. This class includes e.g. the sample variance, standard ability, spread, or scatter. This class includes e.g. the sample variance, standars veriation, range, interquartile range (IQR), median absolute deviation (MAD) etc., that is functions widely used in exploratory data analysis as descriptive statistics.
