 abstract={The aim of the article is to demonstrate the role of national symbols in the identity processes taking place in a divided society, as is the case with Montenegro. In 2006, this country with a population of about 620 thousand people became an independent state. The Montenegrin symbol politics and the disputes surrounding it are analyzed within a wider sociopolitical and historical context. The case of Montenegro illustrates how contradictory the role of national symbols might be in a polarized society. Disagreements over symbols can therefore act as a sort of litmus test to indicate the existing political and identity divisions. Each symbolic element involved in the continuous process of negotiating identity becomes a matter of fundamental importance.},
