As a rule, they were employed through private companies. They came from Germany, the allied states of the Third Reich, and the occupied countries. In the first period, mainly professionals were employed, later also unskilled workers. The conditions of their housing and food were usually disas-trous. They often helped prisoners, mainly by providing food and medicine.
