Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin, van Gieson, orcein and Heidenhein method.A vascular focus involving the corpus callosum, bilateral cingulate gyrus and adjacent white matter was present. It was characterized by complete disintegration in the central part and peripheral thinning of the tissue structure. Mesodermal reaction was almost completely absent. In further specimens including basal ganglia at three different levels, no clear focus of malacia was found. Only the leukocyte deposits in a few vessels in the posterior part of the basal ganglia and at the border of the amnion area suggested the presence of very fresh necrosis. Near the foci in the frontal region, the nerve cells were severely damaged, thinned, and ischemically altered. In the basal ganglia, especially in the thalamus, numerous cells were steatotic. The intraparenchymal vessels showed significant fibrosis. Histological diagnosis: Focus encephalomalaciae inveteratis corporis callosi et gyri cinguli lateris utriusÄ…ue.
