As a result of the electoral victory of the post-communist left ist party, the political scene became polarized. The defeat sealed the decomposition of Sajudis and accelerated the process of clarifying the centre-rightist political parties. However, the parliamentary opposition was able to block the authorities successfully. In the summer of 1993, the evacuation of Russian soldiers from Lithuania was completed. There was also a paramilitary rebellion in the country, and a visit of Pope John Paul II took place.
